In the U.S., 14% of the adult population is ābelow basicā and unable to perform functional reading tasks, and another 29% are āat basicā but below proficient (National Adult Literacy Survey, 2003). These two groups do not read with the fluency, accuracy, or comprehension necessary to decipher newspapers, health guidelines, schedules or manuals.
Reading is not something we do naturally. That means that for most students, reading and writing must be explicitly taught.
I will be a vendor at the 2022 Upstate Homeschool Expo on July 21 at The Childrenās Museum of the Upstate in Greenville, SC!
Iām so excited to share how I can support students of all ages through literacy tutoring. I provide support for students in literacy, literature, and writing. I also support home educators through coaching about curriculum decision-making, types of home education modes, and individualized recommendations for students.

From Emily Handford's podcast: At A Loss For Words
"For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't know there's anything wrong."

Student ownership!š± Thatās when students take responsibility for their learning. This takes time and facilitation from the educator. Itās really important for progressāstudents who learn to take some ownership over what theyāve been taught and how they practice make the most gains!
Check out this cutie who made a bookmark to help her remember to do her reading!ā¤ļø We love seeing personal growth like this!š
This student has been working hard on spelling practice! Iām proud of him!

Positive Learning Coach utilizes multi-sensory, Orton-Gillingham approach curriculum and methods to teach literacy, from the very beginning of acquiring reading and language skills through high school level literacy.
I have extensive experience working with students who have learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, executive functioning challenges and Auditory Processing challenges.
The beauty of the approach I use is that it can be a beneficial way for any student to learn, regardless of learning differences. I tailor each Personal Learning Profile to your student, based on their needs.
Message me today if you have questions about the tutoring services I provide.

In literacy tutoring, I use a program based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is a best practice for students who need explicit reading instructionāand it is beneficial for most students learning literacy.
š Friendly PSA for the weekend! š
