In the U.S., 14% of the adult population is “below basic” and unable to perform functional reading tasks, and another 29% are “at basic” but below proficient (National Adult Literacy Survey, 2003). These two groups do not read with the fluency, accuracy, or comprehension necessary to decipher newspapers, health guidelines, schedules or manuals.

Reading is not something we do naturally. That means that for most students, reading and writing must be explicitly taught.

In literacy tutoring, I use a program based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is a best practice for students who need explicit reading instruction—and it is beneficial for most students learning literacy.
