Over the years, we've had some fantastic and memorable meets against Coach Martens and the Cedar Springs Middle School Track and Field team. If you competed on a Spartan middle school track team at any point in the past twenty years, then chances are that you have met him. We are pleased to be part of this memorial event and hope to see as many Spartans there as possible.
Please consider attending the meet between Sparta MS and Cedar Springs MS on Thursday, May 12 starting at 3:45. Rock your Spartan Blue and help support a great cause.

I know that many of you are aware but in case you aren't, there's been some big changes to our middle school coaching staff.

On the boy's side, Coach Toporski has retired and Coach Landry has accepted the varsity girls assistant coach position. This should mean all new coaches, but Coach Banagis is taking over as one of the coaches and SMS health and PE teacher, Maddie Biedenbender, will be coaching alongside him. Both coaches bring a wealth of experience with them.

Coach Pfeffer also retired so joining Coach Zurek on the middle school girls team is coach Brooke Barringer, who teaches math at the middle school. Welcome aboard Coach!

We look forward to seeing the new heights that our Spartans will reach with this changing of the guard.

FYI - Coach Landry has been the "runner" of this page so unless one of the new coaches takes on ownership of the page, you won't be seeing anything from here until the summertime for cross country season.

Congrats to our 8th grade tracksters on making it through middle school. A special congrats goes out to Erin Alster and Justin Bradford on winning the Principals award which is the highest honor that a SMS student can earn. Both Erin and Justin were captains of their cross country and track teams in 2020-2021.

The boys track team finished their season last night in strong fashion last at Belding finishing second in the conference by a mere 7 points. Twenty-five runners had PRs last night.

Winning conference championships for the team were Joe Dekorne in the pole vault, Zack Austin in the 200 hurdles, and Owen Metzger in the 800 and 1600. The team won three of the four relays also. Champions were the 4x200 team of Brooks, Vanoveren, Reno, and Jackson Jones; the 4x400 team of Dekorne, Wabinimkee, Bunker, and Dekorne; and the 4x800 team of Metzger, Bunker, Brayden Jones, and Deems.

Also placing for the team were Langeland in the 70, 200, and long jump; Austin in the 70 and 55 hurdles, Zach Dekorne in the 400 and pole vault, Wabnimkee in the 400, Brayden Jones in the 800, Deems in the 1600, Bradford and Mis in the 3200, Hendrick in the 55 and 200 hurdles, Vanoveren in the high jump, King in the pole vault, and Bunker in the long jump.

Great job this season. 7-1 in dual meets, one invitational win, and runners up in conference make up a spectacular season!

The Lady Spartans brought home the 2nd place trophy from the OK Silver Conference Championship Meet.
The following ladies scored points or earned personal records in the meet: Madeline Del Castillo, Breean Umlor, Allison Morgan, Lindsey Wiedmeyer, Adrianna Simmons, Jacy Johnson, Claire Kober, Kadence Norman, Amber Landry, Madalyn Schieffer, Ayriel Simmons, Jaiden Baldini, Brooke Owens, Lillyan Ketchel, Isabelle Chasteen, Mia May, Erin Alster, Kaitlynn Potter, Emily Costello, Lauren Bradford, Layla Vallone, Brooklyn Brugnoli, Brayley May, Aaliyah Mack, Jazmynn Bridenstine, Nylah Dye, Natalie Bitely, Elly Penland, Erika Bradford, Kathryn Kober, Isabell Booth, Beraydalynn Bowell, Olivia Moul, Caidence Vanatter, and Faith Barios.

High School regionals are happening right now. Congrats to the 4x800 relay team of Seymour, Landry, Wilson, and Jones on being the first to qualify for the State Finals. All four ran this same event together at Sparta Middle School three years ago!

Proud of our distance crew this year. We did a 5 mile run to the SRA disc golf course and back yesterday. Farthest TEAM run I've done with a group in 17 years of coaching. Thank you Emily Metzger for the waters!
