Sorry about the time lapse, I have been unable to access our page from my school address for a couple of weeks, and did not have time during the day to mess with getting some support to fix it. Hoping the issue stays resolved. The kids still had access to assignments up through 1-10 on Schoology. We completed Homework page 1-6 in class on Monday, and took a successful Quick Quiz on Tuesday.
The rest of our unit will be focusing on using multiples to find a common denominator before adding and subtracting fractions. Look for HW 1-7 to be coming home tonight. If they finish this afternoon they still need to take it home to have it checked. (I will scan and upload HW assignments later today)

Next week, the state Forward assessments begin. My students will be testing in small groups or individually, which probably will not be on the same dates and times scheduled for their classroom. Please make sure they get enough sleep. Even with accommodations for frequent breaks, the sessions are lengthy and it takes a lot of effort for many of our children to attend to task and give it their best effort. This is especially challenging for our 4th graders who need to complete science and social studies in addition to the reading/language arts and math subtests. This week teachers are completing the practice tests so students can learn skills to successfully manipulate the various technology interactives needed for responses.

We will still continue to have math class as frequently as possible, and I hope to finish our unit within the next two weeks. We will take a couple days to do some review of geometry and measurement before we begin testing. Then we will be moving on the multiplication and division of fractions.

Tonights assignment 1-3 ....we did the equivalent fractions and a few of the other problems as a class with examples left on the whiteboard for them to fill in on their sheet.

Wow, snow/ice days the past 3 Tuesdays! We spent the last couple weeks getting students through the winter benchmarks on aimswebPlus. We wanted to get them finished before MAPs assessment start the beginning of February.
The kids have been learning about making equivalent fractions with multipliers and divisors. They are also comparing fractions with unlike denominators (using the buttyerfly method and also multiplying or dividing by a fraction with the value of one whole (e.g. 5/5 or 3/3). At the end of last week we added improper fractions being converted to mixed numbers.... (see some fraction videos attached). Tonight they have Homework 1-2 to complete (or please check over if they already had it finished). There will be another assignment tomorrow (HW 1-3)

The first five homework assignments are uploaded in Schoology, along with a list of IXL math practice skills to support the new skills we will be learning. These will NOT be assigned until the kids are comfortable enough with the new concepts and processes to try problems independently. At this point I am just setting up additional resources. I have included the IXL info below....

Great to be back! Spent our classtime today doing review and assessing math facts. Every student (except RJ who is on 8s) should be practicing their 6's facts for a minimum of 10 minutes each night. They have had over 3 weeks to pass these. Those who have not had notebooks initialed and are still showing zero progress after Wednesday will be staying in 10 minutes of recess time to practice with me. We still have 7s, 8s, 9s, to pass (will not have 3-4 weeks allowed for each). We are covering other facts during the school day.
Research shows focusing on one fact family at a time is more successful when learning basic facts. Playing games that involve ALL facts does not help a student attain master (but it does help build fluency AFTER they know their facts). Skip counting is a strategy that is helpful, but we are looking for accuracy and fluency with facts. In sixth grade approximately 50% of their math grade will be based on facts skills. Please support your child with practicing and mastering these basic math skills. It will make the rest of their math experiences MUCH easier and assignments will get done faster.

5th Grade Concert 6:30 tomorrow evening (Dec. 20th) at the HS !!! We will not be getting our math class in for a few days of days with all the practices and class activities. We will continue reviewing our digit-by-digit division skills and then begin our fraction unit next year. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable winter break!

We continue to work on digit-by-digit division. There is a practice sheet coming home tonight if students did not get it finished during class or quiet time (a couple turned it in already). They were shown two methods that can be used, but we did not have much time to look at the second one. The only difference is that instead of bringing the next digit down by the difference (after subtracting), we bring that difference UP and put it in front of the next digit. The sweet thing about this method is that we don't end up with a LONG string of numbers that end up running into the problem below and numbers getting jumbled up within place values or numbers being brought down. We will keep working on long division with some multi-digit multiplication until winter break. Then get into our fraction unit when we return.
