Dear SMS Parent/Guardian:

The safety of our students and staff at SMS is our top priority. If you drive your student to school and drop them off in the morning, please follow the guidelines below.

- Please do not wait in your car with your student while in the traffic circle. This causes congestion in the drop-off line.
- Please pull as far ahead as possible when dropping off your student(s) as possible. This helps with traffic flow.
- Please do not let your student(s) exit your vehicle until you are directly in front of the Main Entrance to the building.
- Please refrain from parking and letting your student(s) out of the car to walk across traffic during morning drop-off.
- Please follow the traffic circle all the way around to exit. Please do not turn and drive through the parking lot after dropping your student(s) off.
- Do not let your student(s) out in the staff parking lot or along Spartan Avenue.

We appreciate your efforts to help keep everyone safe during our morning drop-off time!

SMS OPEN HOUSE: Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19th from 4:30–7:00 PM

STUDENT SCHEDULES- Students will be able to view their schedule online through PowerSchool tomorrow, August 19th. Paper copies of student schedules will be available in the cafe.

CHROMEBOOK PICK-UP - Chromebook pick-up for all 6th grade students and students who left their devices at SMS over the summer will take place in the cafe. Students who did not pick up their Chromebook will receive it on the first day of school.

STUDENT PICTURES - Student pictures will take place in the gym! Picture forms will be available through the online ordering link below or paper copies can filled out at open house. Picture retakes will be Monday, September 28th

Position Summary: Sparta Middle School is seeking an innovative educator to teach Social Studies while also providing instruction in technology and computer science. Responsibilities include teaching Social Studies aligned to Michigan standards, introducing students to Python programming, computational thinking, digital citizenship, and technology applications, and creating engaging, project-based learning experiences that connect history, civics, geography, and technology.

Required Qualifications:
- Possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or be certified by Fall 2026
- Endorsement in Secondary Social Studies (CQ or RX) -- Technology (NP); additional secondary endorsements preferred
- Passion for working with middle school students
- Willingness to engage in the PLC process of ongoing professional development
- Willing to grow capacity around data dialogues and Response to Intervention (RtI) practices
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to implement 1-to-1 technology in ways that enhance student learning
- Effectively utilize learning management systems (Schoology, Google Classroom, etc…)
- Professional, courteous individual possessing high ethical standards

Part 2: Learning Comes to Life!

Our 8th grade Spartans experienced history in ways that simply can't be replicated in a classroom.

Students explored our nation's capital, walking among the monuments and memorials that honor our country's history while gaining a deeper appreciation for the people and events that shaped America. They also experienced the energy and excitement of New York City, taking in its iconic landmarks, vibrant culture, and unforgettable atmosphere.

Whether standing where history happened, exploring world-renowned sites, or sharing laughs with classmates on the road, every stop offered new opportunities to learn, reflect, and grow.

A huge thank you to our teachers, chaperones, families, transportation partners, and everyone who made this incredible experience possible. Most importantly, thank you to our amazing students for representing Sparta Middle School with curiosity, kindness, and pride throughout the journey.

Welcome home, Spartans! ❤️💙

Part 1: Adventure Awaits!

What an incredible week for our Sparta Middle School 8th graders! From takeoff to the final miles home, this trip was packed with unforgettable experiences, new friendships, and lifelong memories.

Students traveled by both plane and bus as they explored some of our nation's most historic and iconic destinations. Along the way, they learned firsthand about American history, government, and culture while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

From the excitement of traveling together to experiencing places they've only read about in textbooks, this trip was about so much more than the miles traveled, it was about growing as learners, leaders, and citizens.

Our staff and students had a fantastic day yesterday at our Carnival-Themed Field Day!

A huge THANK YOU to the families and local businesses who generously donated to help make this event possible. THANK YOU to our Student Government Students, Ms. Carls, and Sra. Buckner for planning and organizing the event. Your commitment to our students helped create a fun-filled day that they will remember for years to come!
