One of the red juiced varieties being evaluated at the Clarksville Research Center. Cranberry crabapple. Takes a lot longer to fill your picking bucket with these little fruits, glad to have had a team to fill a bin!

Almost ready for harvesting our research trials! Totes lined up and ready to go, datasheets printed, fruit's almost mature. With the big crop we're expecting this year, harvest supplies have been in big demand. Even totes are a hot commodity! Just ask all the researchers trying to figure out where their's have gotten to over the past year... 🍎

Getting things rolling in the 🍎 lab! For the past couple of weeks we've been testing early varieties for maturity. This week: Ginger gold, Paula red, zestar, Premier Honeycrisp, and wildfire gala are looking close! Picking up a little ethylene using our GC and seeing a lot more starch clearing. The nighttime temperatures over the past week have been perfect for coloring 😍

Still starchy... Black and blue apples from our starch iodine tests this week looking at starch hydrolysis. The iodine stain binds to starch in the fruit: more blue/black means more starch means and less sugar. Just starting to see some signs of maturity in early varieties. A little more rest for farmers before harvest kicks into gear. Nice cool nights this week and next are sure to help with color and flavor!
