The Sparkill Dominican Sisters and Associates celebrate the life of Sister Mary Elizabeth Mooney, who died on August 26, 2026, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, in the midst of her family and community. Sister was 82 years old and in her 64th year of religious life.

Sister Mary Elizabeth was born in New York on August 15, 1944, to Patrick and Mary Cosgrove Mooney. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1962, and received the name Sister John Carmel. Sister Mary Elizabeth professed her first vows in 1964 and final vows in 1969.

Sister Mary Elizabeth began her educational ministry at Sacred Heart School in Monroe, NY, where she served from 1966 to 1968. She then moved to St. Rose of Lima School in New York City, where she worked from 1968 to 1974. From 1974 until 2025, Sister Mary Elizabeth dedicated herself to the children and families of the South Bronx at St. John Chrysostom School. She served as Teacher and Assistant Principal from 1974 to 1994 and then as the Principal until 2025, an extraordinary commitment of 51 years. In 1995, Sister Mary Elizabeth received the Law Enforcement Support Award from the New York Shields, and in 2014, the Midtown Hero Education Award sponsored by the Daily News. In 2018, Sister Mary received the Founders Award from St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Sister Mary Elizabeth leaves a legacy of educating, uniting, and empowering teachers, children, and parents during her 51 years of dedicated service. She served an inner-city population, promoting values of faith, hope, and love. Sister Mary Elizabeth was a living example of the power of the Dominican Pillars of Prayer, Community, Study, and Preaching, embracing the mission of the Dominican Sisters through ministry for justice and reverence for all creation. Well done, good and faithful servant. May the road rise up to meet you, Sister Mary Elizabeth Mooney. Rest in peace in the hands of the God you loved and served so faithfully!

The Sparkill Dominican Sisters and Associates celebrate the life of Sister Sheila Mullins, who died peacefully at Good Samaritan Hospital on August 19, 2026, with her family at her side. Sister was 86 years old and in her 68th year of religious life.

Sister Sheila’s ministry of education included St. Brendan School, Bronx, NY (1960-1963); St. Christopher School, Red Hook, NY (1963-1966); St. Mary Magdalene School, Springfield Gardens, NY (1966-1971); and Guidance Counselor, Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, NY (1971-1975). From 1975 until 1991, Sister Sheila ministered in the Diocese of Multan, Pakistan, in Dominican Convent School Bahawalpur, as Teacher/Supervisor (1975-1980, 1981-1987, Principal (1988-1989); in Loreto Chak, Layyah District, as Pastoral Minister (1980-1981); and in Raza Abad Colon, Multan, as Pastoral Minister (1989-1991). Upon her return to ministry in the United States, Sister Sheila served as a Chaplain in Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, NY, from 1992 until 2020. She continued to serve the pastoral needs of Sisters in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY, in her retirement years.

Sister Sheila made a significant impact on the lives of students, parents, and colleagues through her joyful spirit both here and in Pakistan, and in her compassionate ministry at Good Samaritan Hospital. She embodied the Dominican Sisters' mission of proclaiming the Word of God through a commitment to justice and reverence for all creation. Her Dominican Sisters, Associates, family, friends, and everyone she served will deeply miss her joyful and pastoral presence.

The Sparkill Dominican Sisters and Associates celebrate the life of Sister Joan Bartin, who died peacefully on August 19, 2026, in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent. Sister Joan was 95 years old and living her 74th year of religious life.

Born in St. Louis, MO, on January 27, 1931, Mary Joan was the daughter of John and Helen Bawn Bartin. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1952, and received the name Sister John Louise. She professed her first vows in 1954 and final vows in 1959.

Sister Joan’s ministries included Holy Redeemer School, St. Louis, MO (1954-1965 as teacher and again in 1972-1975 as Religious Education Coordinator); Epiphany of Our Lord School, St. Louis, MO (1965-1968); Little Flower School, St. Louis, MO (1968-1969); Religious Education/Teacher, St. Mary Magdalen Parish, Webster Groves, MO (1969-1972); Pastoral Associate, Immaculate Conception Parish, St. Louis, MO (1975-1979); and Campus Minister, Washington University, St. Louis, MO (1979-1980). From 1980 until 2009, Sister Joan served the Native American community in Montana in the Diocese of St. Helena as Pastoral Associate at Sacred Heart Mission.

Sister Joan was a joyful woman of prayer and compassion who touched the lives of countless children, parents, and colleagues in her educational and pastoral ministries in St. Louis, MO, and Montana. She was known and loved for her tireless advocacy for justice. Sister Joan truly proclaimed the Word of God through ministry for justice and reverence for all of God’s creation. We thank God for her life and presence.

This August 6 marks 81 years since the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of people and leaving a legacy of suffering that endures to this day. Yet the threat of nuclear weapons has not diminished: more than 12,000 nuclear warheads remain in the world's arsenals.

In response, we invite you to join the annual Hiroshima Nagasaki Prayer Service, a free, virtual gathering open to all. This year's theme, "From Remembrance to Abolition," calls us to honor the lives lost while renewing our commitment to a nuclear-free world. Thirty-six congregations of women religious (including Sparkill Dominicans) and peace organizations are co-sponsoring this growing witness of faith and peace.
