Need a little extra help after school?

The South Baldwin Literacy Council is offering free after-school tutoring for students at its Fairhope and Foley campuses.

For those who plan to apply through the Common App, it opens today. This is not a necessary way to apply to colleges, but it is an option for those who are applying to multiple schools for consideration. (Please see the “pros and cons” listed below.) If you are only applying to one or two schools, it may be easier for you to apply directly through the college’s website. The Common App is TIME CONSUMING… be prepared!

For most students, the Common Application takes:

* 30–60 minutes to create an account and complete the Profile, Family, Education, Testing, and Activities sections

* 1–4 hours to complete everything, including:
* Personal information
* High school information
* Activities (up to 10)
* Honors/Awards (up to 5)
* Personal essay (if already written)
* College-specific questions

If a student hasn’t written the personal essay yet, the entire process often takes several days since the essay is usually the most time-consuming part.

A realistic timeline for Seniors:

* Account setup: 10–15 minutes
* Basic information: 20–30 minutes
* Activities & honors: 30–60 minutes
* Essay upload: 10–15 minutes (if already completed)
* College-specific questions: 5–20 minutes per college
* Review & submit: 10–15 minutes

Tips for students:

* Set aside 1–2 uninterrupted hours to complete the main application.

Have these items ready before starting:
* High school transcript
* List of extracurricular activities
* Honors and awards
* Parent/guardian education and employment information
* SAT/ACT scores (if you plan to report them)
* Personal essay

*****Save the application as you go—it doesn’t have to be completed in one sitting.
