Woodland’s first and second graders recently met with one of our reading interventionists, Ms. Waskiewicz, to share their thoughts about what it means to be a reader.

They talked about how reading makes them feel, shared advice for a kindergartner who is learning to read, told us about some of their favorite books, and shared what they can do when they come to a word they do not know.

We loved hearing our students share their experiences, strategies, and love of reading. There is so much to learn from our young readers!

📚 At Powder Mill, Books Are Part of Every Day! 💚💛

At Powder Mill, we believe access to great books shouldn’t be something students have to wait for once a week. Reading happens every day—and books should be right where our students are.

That’s why, year after year, we have intentionally invested in building classroom libraries throughout Powder Mill. These collections bring books directly into our classrooms, giving students regular opportunities to choose a book, discover a new author or topic, and read throughout the school day.

Our classroom libraries put books within arm’s reach of students and make choosing something new to read a natural part of the school experience—not a special trip or a once-a-week activity.

While we inventory and reimagine our traditional library space as a future Learning Center, our investment in books and reading continues throughout the building. Our goal is simple: give students meaningful access to books where they spend their day and help build a culture where reading happens everywhere.

📚 Big Things Are Coming to the Powder Mill Library! 📚

Our Powder Mill library is getting ready for its next chapter! While we inventory our collection and rethink and reimagine the space as a future Learning Center, we want families to know that books and reading remain an important part of every school day.

📖 Throughout Powder Mill, many classrooms have their own classroom libraries, giving students plenty of opportunities to choose books, discover new interests, and enjoy reading right in their classrooms.

And we’re not just thinking about what our library has been, we’re imagining what it can become. Our vision is to create a welcoming Learning Center that brings together reading, learning, collaboration, creativity, and exploration in new and exciting ways.

The library may be a work in progress, but our commitment to building a community of readers certainly isn’t. 💚💛

Today, all three of our schools—Woodland Elementary, Powder Mill School, and Southwick Regional School—paused during the school day to remember September 11, 2001.

Because our students range from our youngest learners in PreK to our seniors in high school, the message shared at each school was intentionally a little different. Each was designed to be developmentally appropriate, recognizing that our students have different levels of understanding about the events of September 11th.

But the heart of the message was the same across our District.

We remember.

We remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives 25 years ago and the families whose lives were forever changed.

We honor.

We honor the firefighters, police officers, first responders, medical professionals, and ordinary people who demonstrated extraordinary courage—helping others in the midst of an unimaginable tragedy.

And we learn.

September 11th teaches us something important about who we can be during difficult times. In the face of tragedy, people came together. They helped strangers. They cared for their neighbors. They showed courage, compassion, and kindness.

Those are lessons that even our youngest students can understand and carry forward.

Today, students and staff throughout STGRSD stood for a moment of silence, honoring those who were lost and those who stepped forward to help.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember and we continue to teach the next generation that kindness, service, courage, and caring for one another matters. ❤️🤍💙

At SRS English class isn’t only about reading and writing—it’s also about learning how to communicate clearly, listen actively, collaborate with others, and navigate different perspectives. In Mr. Sterlein's English classes, students practiced taking responsibility, giving and receiving feedback, working through disagreement, persevering when things don't go as planned, and adjusting their thinking when new ideas or challenges arise. These are essential skills that extend beyond SRS and into college, careers, and everyday life.
