🌎✨ One school. Many cultures. A world of discoveries!

What happens when you give children the freedom to explore their heritage, follow their curiosity, and share what makes their cultures special?

A school transforms into a journey around the world! ❤️

From traditional clothing and homemade dishes to history, geography, music, and family traditions, our students brought their research to life during our Hispanic Heritage Showcase.
And the most beautiful part? They weren't just learning about different cultures. They were proudly sharing their own while discovering and celebrating one another's. 🌎

This is what happens when learning becomes an experience. 🌱

Something really special is happening with our Hispanic Heritage projects!

We gave our students the assignment.

They gave it life.

One student asked, “Can I research the ingredients in a traditional dish and then get creative with it?”

Another: “Can I actually sew clothing inspired by an ancient civilization?”

Another chose a topic simply because they wanted to learn about something they knew nothing about.

And another asked, “Can I find a way to incorporate my African culture into my project too?”

YES. YES. YES. YES.

This is what happens when curiosity is allowed to enter the curriculum.

The assignment stops being something a child has to complete and starts becoming something they want to explore.

They research deeper because they have questions.

They make connections we didn’t plan for.

They bring their own culture, interests, creativity, talents, and ideas into the work.

And suddenly, history isn’t just something they’re reading about.

They’re cooking it.
They’re sewing it.
They’re questioning it.
They’re connecting it to their own identity.
They’re discovering people and cultures they didn’t know before.

This is one of my favorite parts of Montessori education.

We still provide the framework. We still have expectations. We still guide the learning.

But within that framework, there is room for the child to say:

“Wait… can I take this in another direction?”

And sometimes, that’s exactly where the best learning begins. 🌿

A few more moments from Lower Elementary at the Cox Science Center. 🤍

Field studies give children something a textbook can’t always give them—the chance to stand in front of something, wonder about it, talk about it with friends, and make their own connections.

And sometimes the most meaningful learning sounds a lot like:
“Wait… LOOK at this!” 😂

Science, curiosity, friendship, and a whole lot of wonder. 🌎✨

I’m going to say something that might make some parents uncomfortable:

Giving a child a phone is not the same thing as giving them independence.

A smartphone isn’t just a device.

It’s an environment.

And suddenly, that environment can include strangers, algorithms, adult conversations, sexual content, violence, social comparison, group chats, trends, opinions and pressures that we may have never intentionally invited into our child’s world.

As Montessori educators, we talk constantly about the prepared environment.

We think about what we place on the shelf.
What the child is developmentally ready for.
How much freedom they can responsibly manage.
And when they’re ready for the next level of independence.

I think we need to approach technology the same way.

This doesn’t mean children should never have phones.

It means freedom should grow alongside responsibility and readiness.

Maybe instead of asking:

“Everyone else has one. When should my child get a phone?”

We start asking:

“What access is my child actually ready to manage?”

Because protecting childhood and building independence are not opposites.

Done thoughtfully, one prepares them for the other.

Apparently, traditional school isn’t the only option. 💚

Here, childhood still gets to be childhood.
There are books and lessons and high expectations — but there are also animals, muddy shoes, real tools, conversations, independence, and adults who genuinely know the children in front of them.

Maybe education doesn’t have to look the way we were taught it should.

Kinda chic, actually.

Technology has a place in education—but it should never replace the relationship between a child and a thoughtful, observant teacher.

A computer can deliver information. A guide can notice when a child is confused but afraid to ask, when they need a greater challenge, or when one carefully chosen lesson could unlock an entirely new understanding.

At Montessori Schoolhouse, children learn through conversation, movement, beautiful materials, meaningful practice, and connection with people who truly know them.

We are preparing children for the future while protecting something deeply human about childhood. 🤍

We’re not just preparing children for the next grade.

We’re preparing them for life. 🌿

At Montessori Schoolhouse, learning means more than completing assignments or memorizing information. It means learning how to care for something, finish what you started, solve a problem, work alongside others, try again when something is difficult, and slowly discover, “I can do this.”

Children cook. They build. They garden. They care for animals. They create. They collaborate. They ask questions. They make mistakes. And through all of it, they become more capable.

Because childhood should be more than preparation for a test.

It should be preparation for a meaningful, independent, thoughtful life. 🤎

That is the kind of education we believe in.

There is a very big difference between working in a Montessori classroom and truly knowing how to guide one.

This year, our Lower Elementary community has had the gift of being led by Ms. Alex, whose experience, calm presence, and deep understanding of children are felt every single day.

A skilled Montessori guide understands that independence does not mean leaving children to figure everything out alone. Freedom does not mean a lack of structure. And Montessori is not simply a traditional classroom with different materials.

It takes experience to know when to present a lesson, when to redirect, when to challenge, when to offer support, and when to quietly step back.

Ms. Alex brings that balance beautifully.

We see it in children settling into meaningful work, becoming more independent, caring for their environment, exploring the natural world, and taking greater ownership of their learning.

The materials matter.
The environment matters.
But the guide matters tremendously.

We are incredibly grateful for the experience, warmth, professionalism, and leadership Ms. Alex brings to our Lower Elementary community. 🌿

This is what thoughtful Montessori guidance looks like.

Someday, our children will leave our classrooms.

They will grow up, go out into the world, build friendships, fall in love, work with people who think differently than they do, and face moments that are hard.

And when that day comes, I hope they remember more than the lessons we taught from a book.

I hope they remember how to be kind when they are angry.

How to listen when someone else is hurting.

How to say, “I was wrong.”

How to forgive.

How to set a boundary without tearing someone down.

How to walk away when they need to — and how to come back together when a relationship is worth repairing.

As parents, we spend so much time worrying about whether our children are learning enough.

But one day, the grades will matter far less than the kind of person they became along the way.

At Montessori Schoolhouse, these moments matter deeply to us.

The disagreement.
The tears.
The conversation afterward.
The apology.
And then, sometimes just minutes later, seeing those same children laughing together again.

That is not time taken away from learning.

That is some of the most important learning we will ever do. 🤍

Because we are not only helping raise capable students.

We are helping raise good humans.
