At The Southport School, students in grades 2–8 with language-based learning differences and ADHD receive individualized, evidence-based instruction in small, supportive classes.

When students feel understood as learners, they can begin seeing themselves differently. With a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio, expert faculty build on each student’s strengths while providing individualized support and appropriate challenges.

Evidence-based approaches, consistent language, and shared strategies are integrated across subjects, creating a cohesive learning experience designed around how each student learns best.

As the world remembers , we are especially moved by the legacy she leaves as a champion for literacy.

Dolly often spoke about her father, whom she called “the smartest man I have ever known.” He never learned to read or write, and she believed that his struggles with literacy kept him from realizing some of his dreams. In his honor, she founded Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in 1995 with a mission of inspiring children to love reading. It grew into a global effort that has put 300M+ books into children's hands.

We know that difficulty with reading is never a measure of a person’s intelligence or potential. We also know what becomes possible when children have access to the right instruction, support, and opportunities to experience themselves as readers.

Dolly Parton gave generations of children that opportunity. We celebrate her extraordinary life and the literacy legacy that will continue in her name.

This gathering is a wonderful reflection of what makes our community special -- friends and neighbors coming together to form and strengthen relationships over a shared meal.

Reading used to be the main way Americans got information, but today most people turn to their phones, the internet, social media, or television for news and entertainment.

Dr. Ben Powers, executive director of The Southport School and founder and executive director of The Southport COLAB, joined The Atlantic staff writer Rose Horowitch on KQED Forum for a conversation about the decline of reading and what it could mean for how we think, learn, and process information.

Dr. Powers discussed how changing environments may be reshaping attention, working memory, language, and the cognitive capacities that deep reading has traditionally helped develop.
