FROM THE CHRONOLOGY OF SOUTHPORT (SMITHVILLE), VOLUME IV
1941 - (August) - Charles E. Gause, tax collector for Brunswick County at Southport, received a 23- pound sack containing 3,450 pennies in payment for the taxes of Leroy Lewis, of Town Creek Township. It was delivered by Steve Mintz, of the same township. This was a repeat performance as it was paid in the same fashion the year before.

Vintage Pennies (1909–1982): These are made mostly of copper and weigh 3.11 grams each. A batch of 3,450 vintage copper pennies weighs 10,729.5 grams, which equals 23.65 pounds.

Quick Financial Fact:
Regardless of their age or weight, 3,450 pennies have a total face value of exactly $34.50.

Dr. Alexander Betts was a Methodist Episcopal minister assigned to a circuit that included Smithville (Southport). In 1861, he became a chaplain in the Confederate army, serving with many men local to Smithville.

"The discriminating minds among our intelligent young people of the South will readily perceive that there is a manifest and important, because truthful, distinction to be maintained touching the style and title of the conflict waged on this American continent during 1861-1865, between The United States and the newly born nationality known as The Confederate States."
