Southlake Math & Reading - Gideon

Building Confidence Through Mastery of Gideon's Math and Reading curriculum for kids from pre-K to 12.

We do this with a nurturing mindset without exasperating a student and partnering with the parents to motivate the child towards a love for learning.

"Your brain lights up like a fireworks show when you write by hand; but typing? Not so much." - Audrey

At SMR, we make sure fireworks are flying everywhere🎇🎆. We even avoided the use of calculators for older students 🤭💪.

This struck a chord when I posted it yesterday, so I wanted to repost with a bit more context.

Firstly, this is not a personal opinion…it’s a statistic! See my citations below.

I believe kids are limitless, and it’s our job as adults to unlock their potential. Grades are not a reflection of IQ or worth. In fact, we don’t even use letter grades at our schools.

But this is an that needs addressing. Millions of kids are not being educated properly in the current traditional school system. I believe all traditional school models are susceptible to students accumulating knowledge gaps that compound over time.

Students get pushed to the next grade without actually mastering material. Over time, the holes in their knowledge compound. When the holes stack, like swiss cheese, outcomes can be very poor. Students get left behind.

And when this happens, there are lifelong trends observed. The data is sobering.

We see this all the time- students arrive at our schools as previously successful A+ earners, but place several grades behind in multiple subjects when we test their knowledge. That’s why we have 5th graders placed in 2nd grade reading or 3rd grade math, for example, when they arrive at our schools. There is always catching up to do!

Citations:
A Chaplin Hall study found that 3rd grade academic struggles predict 8th and 9th grade reading performance, high school graduation, and college attendance.

Similarly, a National Bureau of Economic Research study found that students in the lowest quartile of reading scores at age 7 had wages about 20% lower at age 33 than students in the highest quartile. 05/29/2026

Statistics show that younger students (1st grade and below) can lose up to 70% of what they have learned after a three month break. Older students will also experience the dreaded 'summer slide'.

There is so much more time with no school hours or homework. Think of the progress we can make! Feel free to do extra work since you may have extra time. Since SMR-Gideon is a flexible, individualized system, we are able to accommodate the needs of each student.

We can't do anything about #2 but we sure can help enforce:
#1 - Students are tested every week, and the consequences are corrections and repeating the book with additional guidance and practice.
#3 - We only have books for pencils, never any screens. We don't encourage or allow the students to use calculators (especially for elementary level). They have to write, write, write because that will make them bright, bright, bright!

It's a wonderful feeling and we all want that for our children. But there's no school for the summer 😲🫠 so help them stay engaged and in 'school' over the summer months with us! Schedule the complimentary assessment and we'll show you what wonders we do for our students.

Here's our Game Day ad that we are hoping to air if we can get about $10M in funding 🤣🥲🤣😅.

Even when school is closed, our students are still learning and progressing! We all love the snow but can we only have it during weekends 😆 please?
