National Christian School Athletic Association

SERVANT-LEADERSHIP AWARD
Samuel Chukwu - Central Christian Academy (Southington, CT)
"Sam and his family came to know Christ through our church's bus ministry after moving to the United States from Nigeria. Since that time, Sam has become one of the most faithful and selfless servants in our ministry. He has invested countless hours of his free time into the lives of young people in our community, demonstrating a genuine love for others rooted in gratitude for what God has done in his own life. Sam is especially well loved by the elementary students at our Christian school. He knows many of them personally through years of involvement in youth sports, Sunday School classes, bus ministry, and extracurricular activities. His consistency, kindness, and approachability have made him a trusted role model to younger students. As Sam prepares for college, he is earnestly seeking God's direction for his future career. During our counseling conversation, he shared a strong desire to pursue a path that allows him to show others the same love, care, and encouragement that were extended to him through the church and its ministries. This desire clearly reflects his spiritual maturity and servant's heart. Sam is also a leader among his peers. He served as the captain of our basketball team this year, not only for his athletic ability, but for his shining example on and off the court. He leads by example, treats others with respect, and consistently displays integrity, humility, and compassion. Sam is a tremendous influence on our younger players and a young man of exemplary character."
The NCSAA Servant-Leadership Award is presented to senior athletes from our member schools who exemplified leadership by serving their teammates and opponents, displaying Christlike character in their competition, and interacting with others with a deep commitment to building them up. Thank you for leading and serving, Samuel, and for being dedicated to demonstrating Christ's sacrificial love.

Our Senior High Handbell Choir had the amazing opportunity of bringing Christmas cheer to the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. We performed in the CT Hall of Fame, and had some fun touring the Capitol building and ice skating in Bushnell park.

NCSAA Girls’ Varsity Basketball National Coach of the Year:
Scott Matney (Central Christian Academy – Southington, CT)

It is with great pleasure that NCSAA announces that Scott Matney has been selected as the 2024-25 NCSAA Girls’ Varsity Basketball National Coach of the Year.
Matney has coached at Central Christian for seventeen years, including years spent coaching the boys’ varsity team. He led this year’s girls’ team to a 24-4 record, and a CACS Connecticut State Championship. His team placed second place at the EIT, and third place in their division at the NCSAA Championships. Matney also reached an important competitive milestone this season - his 250th career win!
As Coach Matney has a deep impact on the people around him, CCA’s athletic department has this to say about him: “Coach Matney is a full-time attorney outside of his coaching responsibilities. He 100% volunteers his time to our school's basketball program, and our players love and respect him for it. He has coached both our boys' and girls' teams at different points in his career and brought them both from non-competitive teams (non-existent in the case of our boys' team) to competitive and winning teams. Our school is very small and almost exclusively competes against larger more formidable opponents. With coaches like Coach Matney, however, we are able to field a competitive team against these opponents. He sets high expectations for his players and provides them with the opportunities and tools to meet those expectations. He does this all while keeping the sport fun. But most importantly to him and to our program, he uses every basketball opportunity as a way to point his players to Christ. We are fortunate and thankful to have a coach like Scott Matney as part of our basketball program.”

Kelly Turisi (Former Player): "I've had the privilege to not only have been coached by Scott as a player but also to be mentored by him as a coach and assistant on his team. He has the unique ability to identify the strengths of his players and extract the best from them, both on and off the court. This honor recognizes his love for the game and every player that has been driven to success by his investment in them."

Maggie Bono (Current player, Senior): "Coach Scott Matney never fails to give his all while coaching the sport he loves. It is such a blessing to have a coach that is a father figure, Godly man, and loves his players and will do anything for them. He pushes you and encourages you to be the best and to always fight like a tiger."

Julia Young (Current player, Senior): "Coach Matney is genuinely one of the most hardworking, encouraging, caring coaches anyone could ask for. He is an amazing leader and knows exactly how to push his team to be the best they can be."
NCSAA considers the National Coach of the Year awards to be the highest honor that we bestow each year. As a national organization of more than 500 member schools, we select only one National Coach of the Year in girls’ basketball each year, so our selection of Scott is a recognition of his deep commitment to Christ-centered athletics and impacting the lives of the kids that he coaches.

Congratulations and thank you, Scott, for a job well-done and the impact that you have had upon your community!

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as if working for the Lord, not for men...It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23-24)
