I never knew how powerful this picture would be when I took it. To most of you, it must look like just another empty chair at a kitchen table. To those of us who have experienced it, this is where the other half of our budo training occurred. This is where O Sensei Eizo Shimabukuro sat at every meal in his home and gifted his knowledge. Karate history, Okinawa history, his lineage, his family, culture, cooking, business, language, personal advice, and even some jokes.
No matter how many times I visited (or how late in the evening we arrived) there was always a “welcome” meal accompanied by a thorough history of Shorinryu and the same stern advice, “never no change kata”.
On this day in 2017, O Sensei passed. Whenever I look at this picture, I can’t help but think O Sensei left things perfectly in order and has generously “set the table”.
Thank you OSensei. We miss you. And, someday “see again”.

Happy Birthday Sensei. We miss you!
