🎸 U2 formed in Dublin, Ireland, on September 25, 1976. It was founded when 14-year-old drummer Larry Mullen Jr. posted a notice on the bulletin board at Mount Temple Comprehensive School looking for musicians to start a band.
🥁 The original lineup consisted of Mullen, Bono (Paul Hewson), The Edge (David Evans), Adam Clayton, Dik Evans (The Edge's brother), and a few other schoolmates. After a few practices, the lineup pared down to the definitive four-piece that remains today: Bono (lead vocals), The Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, vocals), Adam Clayton (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums). They briefly performed under the names "Feedback" and "The Hype" before officially adopting the name U2 in 1978.
🎤 U2 is still together. The iconic rock band has maintained its original lineup—Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.—since 1976. They have been recording new music, returning to the studio to work on new projects following drummer Larry Mullen Jr.'s recovery from neck surgery.

The legendary English punk rock band The Clash officially formed in London in 1976, ignited by guitarists Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, who recruited frontman Joe Strummer. Known as "The Only Band That Matters," they spearheaded the British punk movement before expanding into reggae, funk, and rockabilly.
The punk rock band The Clash officially disbanded in early 1986, but their demise unfolded in stages starting in 1983. Internal friction, artistic disagreements, and the firing of key members effectively marked the end of the band's golden era, cementing their legacy as one of music's most influential acts. 🎸 🎤 🥁 🎵

ZZ Top formed in Houston, Texas, in late 1969. Founded by vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons, the band solidified its classic lineup shortly after with bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. The Police were formed in London in 1977. Originally a trio featuring Sting (bass/vocals), Stewart Copeland (drums), and Henry Padovani (guitar), the band quickly transitioned to its classic lineup with Andy Summers replacing Padovani later that year. They released their debut single, "Fall Out," in May 1977. 🥁 🎸 🎤 The Police effectively disbanded in 1984–1986 at the height of their fame, driven by intense internal tensions, creative differences, and Sting’s desire to pursue a solo career. While they stopped touring in March 1984 after the Synchronicity tour, the formal end came in 1986 following failed reunion attempts.

Stone Temple Pilots (STP) broke into the mainstream in 1992 with their debut album, Core, released on September 29 of that year. While the band formed in the late 80s as "Mighty Joe Young" in San Diego, they signed with Atlantic Records and changed their name before releasing Core, which featured hits like "Plush" and "S*x Type Thing". Stone Temple Pilots (STP) has not broken up as of 2026, though they experienced major, well-documented splits in the past, most notably firing founding vocalist Scott Weiland in 2013. Following Weiland's death in 2015, the band continued with new vocalists, including Jeff Gutt, and has toured and released music since.
