Why do recyclables need to remain loose after being discarded?

Recyclables are optically and hand-sorted based on material type at the RRRASOC Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), which means they need to be identifiable as they’re going down the sort line. Bagged recyclables cannot be easily identified; thus they are not recycled. Remember to keep your recyclables loose!

Next Sunday is National Book Lovers Day! There are many alternatives to throwing a used book away, such as reusing, donating, or regifting it. If your softcover book is beyond repair, we accept them as part of our recycling program. As for hardcover books, they are not accepted but why not turn them into a DIY craft?

To learn more about the benefits of reusing and repurposing, visit www.rrrasoc.org/recycling/reuse-repurpose.

Aluminum is considered a “sustainable metal”, which means it can be recycled again and again with no degradation in quality. Making products out of recycled aluminum is more energy efficient and faster than making them from scratch (that is, mining ore from the ground), so remember to recycle your aluminum foil and soda cans!
