Teach for America hosts a summit every ten years. And it did not disappoint.

Conversations. Connection. Community. On a national level with educators from all over the country?! Couldn’t have asked for more!

Detroit will get its own reflection because even in another city across the country, my city always represents!

But for now, I’m just grateful to be celebrated for the work I’ve been doing going on 15 years with some of my absolute favorite people.

As an educator and a parent I’m always looking for experiences and opportunities to be in community and enjoy my city at the same time.

Eastern Market After Dark brought Detroit out to celebrate art, culture, music, and make memories.

Time with my youngest is always a vibe. And then we were joined by so many different people in our village! From old co-workers turned family, to former students 🥹, to my Surge Sibs, and my forever Girl Scout sister friend 🤞🏽we truly enjoyed the space. And the food!

Grateful to flex in life with the simple things, like quality time and building memories one event at a time.

September 5th, 2023 I started the transition from the school district to non profit education.

I didn’t foresee it happening but God did.
I didn’t know how much it would change my life but God did.
I didn’t know the doors that it would open but God did.

It doesn’t even feel like three years have passed by but they have. So many lessons in this season of my life and in this role have gotten me to this point.

This era is the opening of two community hubs.
The hiring of 24 CHAMPs, 6 Program Advisors, and 1 Program Coordinator.
The second year of my full time G313 staff being in motion and helping to lead the charge.
Emergency Grant funding dispersed to Detroit students.

And blessing on top of blessing alongside the baddest executive director and amazing team I could ask for.

Thank you God for another year in my purpose and passion of serving Detroit. Cheers to Year 4! Here I come!

The University of Michigan was my first experience as girl from Detroit with other cultures on a personal level.

My beautiful line sister has known since we met that at some point as we learned more about her Eritrean culture and family, that as her sands we couldn’t wait to share in special moments and memories.

From Delta, to college graduation, to her medical school acceptance, residency, graduation, and now her Eritrean Melsi and Baptism of her firstborn son… we’ve been blessed to be part of her village. 🥹😭

Truly an experience I can’t put into words. So grateful for the Tesfai family and their love for us over the years. We left feeling habesha and yelling elelelele with pride 🇪🇷 Congrats to the Kidane’s. We love you down and always will.

Back to School has always been my favorite time of year.

Yes it’s exhausting. It’s costs money on top of money 🤣 But it’s the natural maturation of your children growing and parenting taking on new life.

This back to school year looks and feels a little different with the oldest now a college graduate 😭 and the youngest more settled into middle school.

But one thing is for certain, my kids will always have what they need. I’ll always show up for them. And back to school will always be my time to reflect on our journey and where God is taking us next.

Grateful. Immensely Proud. And Honored to walk into this next season with my babies. 💙💙

Surge was a six month experience that became life changing. Beyond that six month period these people, my sibs, have become family.

Our monthly outings are a time to let our hair down, vent about life, and be in community with people who got to see the most authentic and vulnerable sides of each other.

I’m grateful for the August month social for reminding us that sometimes we just need to breathe and in doing so you’ll feel so much better because of it.

Anxiously waiting to see when the Det 27 Cohort announcement will come out 👀 we are ready to embrace our new sibs! 🧡

In September I will have been at DCAN for three years. It still doesn’t feel real sometimes that God led me away from the school system and into education non profit.

But He never makes mistakes and the growth and doors he’s opened since then has been more than I could ask for.

I can’t wait to see how this next chapter continues to challenge me as I prepare with my team to get the East Side Hub location ready 👀 and scout a third location for the future.

What is the Community Hub Model and why does it work?

Graduate 313 is large family.

From our full time staff that includes my amazing Program Director and Program Managers to our consultants of Program Advisors and CHAMPion for Change Ambassadors, our village is constantly collaborating to ensure Detroiters that come through our doors have their voices heard and needs met.

Our dedicated Community Advisory Board Members helped lay the foundation with Town Hall Meetings and sessions that helped name this level or programming for DCAN.

If we’ve served over 2,800 Detroiters with no physical building…imagine what we are about to do now with two.
