What can children do with a few milk crates? A LOT. 🖤

Crate play gives children opportunities to build, balance, collaborate, problem-solve and completely transform their play environment. There’s no single “right” way to use them—and that’s the point.

Simple materials. Big thinking. Child-led play.

Why do we allow risky play at Early Spark Academy?

Because climbing, balancing, exploring, and testing physical limits can help young children develop confidence, coordination, problem-solving skills, and body awareness.

And yes — supervision is still a big part of risky play. Teachers stay close, remove hazards, and step in when needed while giving children space to work through manageable challenges.

Instead of immediately saying “Get down,” we might ask, “What’s your plan for getting down?” 💛

We don’t remove every risk. We help children learn how to navigate it.

What looks like simple play is filled with learning. 🪨

As children dropped rocks into the tube, they were making predictions, exploring cause and effect, solving problems, and discovering how the world works.

When we follow children’s interests, curiosity becomes learning. 💚

“What is a shadow?”

Instead of telling our children the answer, we asked them what they thought.

Their ideas became the starting point for an investigation using flashlights, loose parts, and lots of curiosity. Together, they explored how light creates shadows by testing their own theories.

At Early Spark Academy, we believe children learn best when they’re encouraged to wonder, explore, and discover for themselves. ❤️
