Congratulations to Siwei (Serena) Lin ’28, whose submission, Blue Grotto – Ocean’s Glowing Floor, earned national recognition in the 2026 AAPT High School Physics Photo Contest! 📸 ⚛️

Serena’s entry was selected as one of the Top 100 from more than 1,000 student submissions and was displayed at the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) national meeting in Pasadena, California, this summer. Her entry also received an Honorable Mention for Writing.

Inspired by a family visit to Capri’s famous Blue Grotto, Serena explored the physics behind the cave’s remarkable electric-blue glow. Her analysis explains how sunlight enters through a large underwater opening and interacts with the water, white sand, and seafloor—and how the selective absorption and scattering of different wavelengths of light create the grotto’s brilliant blue appearance.

Once a Lion, always a Lion 🦁

Members of the Class of 1993 (Myeta Moon, Molly Little Olcott, Kristen Urban Cohen, Taren Bradley, and Sarah Moore Lord) reunited in Lake Tahoe this summer. They were joined by Ellie Cohen ’26 and Tess Kelly ’26 for a special connection across generations.

They recreated a photo from their St. Mark’s Prize Day more than 30 years ago. Some things change, but St. Mark’s friendships last.

We’re celebrating 🦁 with a few familiar felines from around campus.

Lions have captured our imagination for thousands of years, often symbolizing strength, courage, and justice. Our own connection to the lion goes back to 1869, when Headmaster Robert Traill Spence Lowell created the School seal, taking inspiration from the winged lion of St. Mark in Venice.

More than 150 years later, the lion is still an unmistakable part of who we are.
