The Southampton School District Board of Education has appointed Jose Torres as the new director of transportation.

“Our transportation department plays a vital role in supporting our students and families each day, and we are excited to have Jose Torres take on the important leadership role of director of transportation,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Fatima Morrell. “His experience will certainly ensure the continued success of the department and safety of all our students.”

Torres, of Shirley, joins the Southampton School District from the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District, where he served as transportation supervisor since 2021. In that role, he was responsible for scheduling, coordinating and dispatching buses, as well as overseeing inspections and repair work.

Prior to serving in Mattituck-Cutchogue, Torres was a dispatcher, hiring and training assistant manager, and bus driver.

He holds a school bus driver instructor certification from the State Education Department and School Bus examiner certification from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

“I am excited and honored to join the district as the new director of transportation,” said Torres. “I look forward to working alongside our transportation team, drivers, students and families to provide safe, reliable and efficient transportation services each day."

Incoming Southampton Intermediate School fifth graders got a head start on the new school year during a summer orientation on Aug. 25. They explored the building, visited their classrooms and learned how to navigate the hallways using their class schedules. They also practiced an important new skill: opening and using their lockers. With staff members on hand to offer guidance, the students gained confidence before the first day of school.

Southampton School District students in grades K-8 cumulatively read over 556 books, 29,000 pages and 3.5 million words over the summer as part of Superintendent Dr. Fatima Morrell’s annual summer reading challenge. Some students also connected their reading to creative STEAM projects, extending their learning beyond the pages of their books.

The 91 students who completed the challenge were celebrated during a culminating event on Aug. 6, earning prizes and accolades.

The summer reading initiative kicked off in June when Dr. Morrell visited Southampton Elementary School to read “We Are All Connected” by Gabi Garcia to students in both English and Spanish. Students were then tasked with exploring diverse books and completing eight to 10 book reports based on their reading.
