There's more than one way to be out here in September.

Some people want a guide who knows where the current runs easy, someone who can put a rod in your hand or point out what's moving through the marsh. That's the Explorer Experience, a private tour, two and a half to three hours, all gear included, built for any age.

Others just want a kayak or paddleboard and a map, then the rest of the day to themselves. That's what the rentals are for, self-guided, delivered right to you, out for two hours or the whole day.

A lot of people assume the water stops being ours to use once camp ends.

It doesn't. The Explorer Experience runs the same trip, structured the same way, just open to any age. Two and a half to three hours out on the bay, gear included, whoever wants to come along. We've had grandparents in the kayak next to a six-year-old, first-time paddlers next to people who've done this for years.

A week doesn't happen in one moment. It happens in a hundred small ones.

Paddling out in the kayaks. A tank on the boat filling up with whatever came out of the water that day. Bare feet in the marsh, hands in the sand, somebody holding something up to get a better look at it before it goes back in.

The Explorer Camp wraps up soon, but the water's not going anywhere.

The Explorer Experience keeps running through September, private tours out on the bay for whoever wants to come along. Kids, parents, grandparents, longtime paddlers, first timers, all welcome. A few hours out there, at whatever pace the day calls for.

A spot doesn't come open like this very often.

Week 11 has one seat left. Five days moving between the forest, the marsh, and the bay, pulling nets, tracking the tide, and finding out what the water hands over that day. That's most of what a week here actually looks like, kids paying attention because something in front of them is worth it, not because anyone told them to.

If your explorer hasn't had a week yet this summer, this is likely the one that fits.

There's a specific kind of proud that shows up on a kid's face the moment something is actually his, not handed to him.

One of our staff kept the line steady, but the kid held on and brought it in himself, flat and speckled and still hooked when he lifted it up to show everyone on the beach. That's most of what we do out here. We stay close enough to help if it's needed and step back enough to let a kid earn the moment on his own.

Week 10 and Week 11 are full. Week 12 still has room, and it's the final week of the season, running August 31 through September 4. A few spots are open.

A question we get a lot: what happens if the weather doesn't cooperate on camp day?

The honest answer is that it changes where we go, not whether we go. Eric watches the wind, the tide, and the sky the same way the kids eventually learn to, and the day shifts around whatever those three are doing that morning. A choppy bay might mean more time in the maritime forest. A grey sky might mean the shoreline instead of open water.

Kids notice this happen in real time, and it becomes its own kind of lesson, the plan can change and the day still turns out fine.

There's a stretch of water where a line of double kayaks moves through together, staff up front, an explorer settled in the back seat of each one.

Nobody's out there alone and nobody's steering solo either. That's just how a week here works, someone experienced right in the boat until an explorer starts reaching for their own paddle.

Week 8 is already out on the water. Week 9 still has a few spots open if your explorer wants a morning like this one.
