SamC Guitar Lessons I've played guitar for over 40 years and taught for 30 years. I am currently taking students in Woods Cross and Salt Lake. Cottrell.

I studied guitar at Utah State University, have toured the US with several bands, and have a degree in Audio Engineering (CRAS). My name is Sam, you don’t need to call me Mr. I started playing the guitar at the age of 9 in 1984 (you do the math) and I’ve been teaching for about 30 years. I attended Utah State University from 2003-2005 and studied classical guitar with Mike Christiansen and Kris Krompel. I’ve toured the United States with a few different bands, mostly playing some version of rock music, but I have played everything from classical and flamenco to jazz, punk, and country. I also have a degree in Audio Engineering from the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences. There I learned studio engineering, live sound, production audio (TV and movies), and a little bit about the music business. I have played bass in a few bands and on my own recordings, as well as a little mandolin, ukulele, percussion, and I’ve been both a lead and harmony vocalist.

I ran into Jonathan Wilson’s music about 20 years ago. A friend had copies of his first two self produced albums, City Songs and Country Songs. I was hooked. In 2008 I got a copy of Frankie Ray and caught his show at the Troubadour in LA. I chatted with him for a few minutes before Vetiver took the stage. He seems a kind soul and is quite shy.

After that he disappeared for a couple of years, spending time in India and working on his first major label release, Gentle Spirit. People noticed his talent. He began jamming with Chris Robinson of the Black Crows and anyone who was hanging out at Rick Ruben’s studio. A jam appeared from Jonathan’s basement, Chris and the guys from Wilco playing Beatles tunes. Jackson Brown asked him to tour, Elvis Costello had him on a studio session, Roger Waters had him in the studio and on tour, Graham Nash invited himself on stage at a festival to sing harmonies on the title track. Graham and David Crosby appeared on Fanfare, Jonathan’s second album. Bluegrass and Americana legend Mark O’Conner cowrote and played on several songs on Dixie Blur.

Note the use of gear, old school. Enjoy this great songwriting and pure analog refinement.

When I was a younger man, I detested country music. When I was studying at USU, I ran across a recording that Brad Paisley and this guy, Albert Lee, did for a Musicman Guitars promo. I was blown away. I still detest the miserable songwriting and pandering of modern country, but stylistically, I love the music and have tried to incorporate some of the techniques (hybrid picking, chicken picking’, banjo rolls, etc.) into my playing.

There are a lot of top tier players in and around Nashville. Albert Lee (who is British btw), Johnny Hiland, Any Wood, Brad Paisley, Danny Gatton, Ray Flack, Merle Travis, Jerry Reed, Roy Clarke, and of course, the late great legend Chet Atkins. You’ll find heavy influences from these guys manifest in the playing of guys like Eric Johnson, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, and Eddie Van Halen.
