" why are hunt horses so expensive?"

A good hunt horse doesn't just jump nice, or soft on the bit to frame up nicely. A good hunt horse has a brain, it makes good decisions, and is adjustable.

I always say it takes at least three full seasons to begin to consider a horse a made hunt horse WITH a great brain. The first season, a horse starts out very well in the field because it doesn't know what the hells happening. The horse is interested and invested, but needs your guidance. The second season I call the teenage stage where the horse decides they don't need you anymore and they want to do what they want to do. That's actually the stage i hate the most with training a hunt horse. Then, the third season, things begin to click. They understand their job and enjoy their job. It's a nice mix of they know what to do, but are also there for your guidance. Not every horse can hunt. Most horses can do well at a show, but hunt horses are special. You are trusting it to gallop over a three foot coop with twenty plus other horses in tow. Your grandma is trusting her hunt horse to safely Keep her in the saddle for hours In third flight. You are trusting your horse to not kill you both when I heard of deer run by.

The training is not just on the hunt field, but endless miles of trails, paper chases, show exposure, ring work with a side of shenanigans to keep their brain sharp, and desensitized. Aside from the training, almost all hunt, horses need shoes at least front. If not hinds. Hunt tack is not cheap. The fuel to drive the horses to each meet is not cheap. I don't think any discipline is easy to start a horse from scratch and bring it up through the levels but creating a reliable, keen fox hunter is a tough and long process. But I good hunt horse will last you forever and is happy to get on that trailer and do just about any job for you.

🦊hunt horse lease🦊

I have no idea how this guy hasnt found his lease person! He wi tote around your dumb boyfriend, or your nervous friend that wants to go on a random trail ride. By no means is he a fancy guy, basic model edition but hes the steady eddie everyone can enjoy.

Giantinthemoonlite ( red) 2011 chestnut tb gelding 16 hands

Red has been hunting 3 full seasons now with various hunts in second and third flight. He stands at checks. He does not pull, he can go off on his own alone and is good with the pack. Hound, traffic, and shenanigans safe, but not huge on cattle or pigs. No vices otherwise. He has miles and miles of trails and paperchases under him. He will walk trot canter in the ring, but again hes a pretty basic dude. THIS HORSE DOES NOT JUMP( he will jump logs and cross rails, but i do not consider that a jumping horse).

He is just a simple steady eddie to trail ride, hunt, and plod around the ring on. He has had the western saddle on many times, he has side saddle for us for 3 years and happy to do whatever the task is really. A guy that can take a joke over and over again. He'd be an asset to anyone's program. No maintenance, front shoes, does all the basic things a horse should do and is up to date with everything.

I am blessed to have such exceptional horses but some horses are in a league of their own, such as Haze.

Haze quickly became my oversized big spoiled man child horse. His personality was even bigger then all 17 hands of him, he was the finest jumper around, he LOVED the hounds and the hunt, his manners were so kind. He took his job seriously and there was no one who wouldn't fall in love with him. He had minimal chrome but was so gorgeous he was still eye catching as an old school red bay tb hunter with a soft, sweet eye. Haze took tons of people on their first hunt, first trail ride, first trip around the dixon oval, harrisburg and ludwigs. He screamed class no matter what he was doing with a touch of derp. He always tried to kill me during the races, which had me praying but after we survived it was something to laugh about. I could trust him 100000% percent galloping him flat out at a timber fence and know i was safe. He trusted his riders and gave them confidence they needed no matter the task.

Over the last year and some we have been battling what appears to be chronic conformation lameness. We did X rays, blocking, lameness exams, bute regiments, stall rest, light turn out, corrective shoeing, chiropractic, injections, supplements and everything in between to try and get him comfortable as he would spend his time with his foot cocked up. As a double header he was also hit with another round of lymes which unfortunately takes a major toll on him, he becomes super spooky, nervous, and hits the fight or flight button and at 17 some hands its dangerous. My sweet boy was not thriving, he was hurting and his personality crushed by the symptoms of lyme. The vets and I concluded the lameness would most likely not be corrected, and bringing him back from another round of lymes was going to be very hard. Selfish me wanted to keep hoping we could find the issue and it would be treatable but the day I went to bring him a treat in the field and he spooked and ran from me I knew he isn't himself anymore but a shell of the lymes and being left behind instead of loading up in the trailer.

I opened the gate and he hobbled into the barn, he went straight to my feed can, pushed the lid off in the typical goofy Haze way and went to town on the feed and I told him he could have whatever the hell he wanted on this day. I am a person that deletes things when it hurts but he deserves every ounce of recognition. Haze I do miss you so fu***ng much, you are one hell of a horse and I think anyone that has sat on you would agree. I lost you way too soon my sweet boy

Winds of Grace " lemons" 🍋
2020 reg unraced tb pony mare at 14.1 hands

Lemons is a phenomenal try hard to please type of gal. She has hunted two full seasons with numerous hunts in second and third flight with a few first flight hunts sprinkled in. She has attended most vixens meets for my clients and is heavily used in my hunt hire program. Hound, traffic, cattle safe. She has hunted twice a week every week of each season and entering her third season hound walking and cubbing.

Aside from hunting, lemons is used in my riding program which includes frequenting paperchases, trail rides off and on farm, hacking out alone, local hunter shows, my bar ride, adult horse camp, swim camp, lake days, cross country schooling, hunter trials, lessons and flag holder in a parade. I have had her in western tack and ridden her off farm for events ba****ck. Her resume is a lot taller then she is and at only 6 years old this gal is only going to keep getting better with such aa solid base foundation.

Lemons goes in a waterford snaffle, no extra gear, excellent manners and no vices. She was the first horse i started riding again after my spinal surgery because I just trust her. She rides more like a horse then a pony giving her 3 very comfortable gaits and one hell of a hind end for big, clean jumps. She is currently jumping comfortable up to 2' 6, no auto changes but shes balanced and inclined to do so. I recommend a confident intermediate on up for her as shes young and easily influenced so she finds a confident rider most beneficial at this time. Lemons does all the basic things a good horse should do, loads right onto the trailer, stands for blacksmith, ties, stands to mount from the ground or mounting block, ect. She is incredibly sweet and will happily exchange grooming you for some chest scratches. The difference w how I start my horses from scratch is they are treated with confidence and deal with lots of random shenanigans ( throwing water balloons, shooting watering, kids camp games, mounting from the wrong side, jousting w pool noodles, swimming double- the type of stuff that makes a horse karen have a heart attack) creating a confident, smart and unreactive horse.

In short this is a bad ass mare for someone who wants to do it all and has the security to throw her on the trailer and go! I am jealous to not see this gal mature but shes going to be someone's everything for life. Lemons is barefoot, sound, up to date w all the things and can be seen in pottstown pa 18️⃣ 000

Appointment and fee required, but welcome to spend all the time you want w her. She can also be seen at radnor as shes hound walking/ cubbing every tues/ sat.
