Most teachers learned math the same way their students are learning it now.
Procedurally. Follow the steps. Get the right answer. Move on.
It works — until it doesn't.
When students hit fractions, multiplication, algebra — the cracks appear. And teachers who never learned the why behind the math find themselves without the tools to help.
That's exactly what Dr. Mona Dickson, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction for Beaufort County Schools, discovered when she dug into her district's data.
The gaps weren't random. They were foundational. And they weren't just a student problem.
"This was not just a student deficit — it was also an instructional one."
So instead of adopting a new curriculum, Beaufort County invested in their teachers.
Teachers began asking students to explain their thinking. PLCs started focusing on real student work instead of test scores. And perhaps most powerfully — teachers began to see themselves as learners, continuously refining their practice to better serve their students.
When teachers become learners, students feel the difference.✨
