We are not measuring teachers. We are communicating leadership.
That's one of the biggest mindset shifts I'm encouraging leadership teams to make as schools begin a new year.
We've inspired. We've cast vision. We've communicated instructional priorities.
Now comes the moment that determines whether those priorities become everyday practice.
The first leadership walkthrough.
Too often, walkthroughs are treated as opportunities to collect evidence.
I believe they're opportunities to communicate leadership.
Every classroom visit answers questions teachers are already asking:
• What matters here?
• What kind of feedback should I expect?
• Is this about my growth or my compliance?
• Will I be supported after today?
The answers shape school culture long before a coaching conversation ever takes place.
That's why the walkthrough itself can't be the most important part.
The leadership system we place around the walkthrough has to be.
How are principals preparing before they enter classrooms?
How will evidence be used to strengthen instruction and not simply document teacher performance?
How will coaching conversations reinforce your instructional priorities throughout the year?
Great walkthroughs are a part of a leadership system that develops people through reflection, coaching, and continuous improvement.
That's where sustainable instructional improvement begins.
So here's my question for you:
If principals completed their first walkthrough tomorrow, what evidence would tell you your instructional priorities are becoming classroom practice and not simply beginning of the year expectations?
Share your thoughts in the comments. I'd love to learn how your leadership team is approaching the first walkthrough of the year.
If you're a principal or district leader who wants dedicated time to strengthen your walkthrough and leadership systems before the school year gains momentum, I'm opening a limited number of RESET™ Leadership Strategy Sessions this month.
Send me a direct message with "RESET," and I'll send you the details.
