We are overwhelmed with joy and excitement that today almost 25 children in our community met together and had their first day of school. It didn’t happen the way we thought it would -- it never does, right?! But we are smiling from ear to ear.
In the past 7 months, we took our school from an idea to a community of passionate families and educators. We didn’t find a building that we can call our own. But we found a school that our entire community -- families and educators -- now belongs to.
For the 2021-22 school year, our families are attending Weekday, a 70 year old South Orange school that has educated generations of local children. The school has three classrooms, three teachers, and an incredible Head of School. The children began school today by working on an all school art project to create a banner for display.
We are still looking for a building that we can call home. But in the interim, we are very happy and grateful to be at Weekday.

There are a lot of people hurting in our community right now. Our friends at the Millburn Cooperative Nursery School lost nearly everything at their non profit kindergarten program yesterday. Just as the teachers had finished setting up for next year, the K school was completely devastated by flooding and lost nearly everything. We’ve linked their gofundme below in the comments if you can show your support, we know they would appreciate it greatly. Thank you so much Village School Community.

I keep saying to parents over and over again: "Please don’t spell words for your children." We really want them to find their own motivation and to feel encouraged to try. So you say, "Write what you hear."
This is an example of really, really important risk-taking for children. If they take these academic risks when they’re young, they’re not going to feel stuck on spelling when they get older.
If they’re writing a story and they want to say, the house is enormous -- if they’re scared to spell it wrong, they’re going to write the house is big, because it’s more important to them to be right than to be really expressive in their writing.
So we really want to encourage this kind of risk taking, what is sometimes called, "inventive spelling" or "sound spelling," in the younger elementary years. -- Samantha Grab, Head of School
