Funds for struggling Black Colleges across America
The schools are remnants of the days of segregation, when black and white students were not allowed to attend the same classrooms. Since the 1960s, however, many HBCUs have diversified. West Virginia State University, for example, is now predominantly white.
Dozens of small, private universities set up for African-American students--known as Historically Black Colleges and Universities or HBCUs--are being hit hard by the economic recession. Traditionally, these niche schools lack the big endowments of larger institutions, and, as a result, rely primarily on tuition fees for funding.
The Legal Defense Coalition for the Preservation of Public HBCUs, which is also supporting the lawsuit, published a 2008 report claiming the state violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the 14th Amendment in its treatment of the three colleges.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities tour part1 ACT charter school Columbia College and Co-op Image produced this piece about ACT's HBCU tour in 2005.
Lawrence Davis, an advisory board member and chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, said he's still hopeful the 10 percent goal will be realized. "If you look into the heart of our institutions the kindest word I can use is we've been under-funded," Davis said. "We really need these resources for basic needs on our campus.
