Recovery is a journey, not a destination. So often, I hear people in recovery say, “Once I hit ____years sober, everything will be easy.” But here’s the truth: long-term recovery doesn’t make relapse impossible. It’s not a finish line where the work ends. In fact, the deeper into recovery you go, the more your growth and transformation evolve.

Sobriety is a lifestyle – a continuous process of healing your mind, body, and spirit. And yes, it’s uncomfortable. It’s hard. But it’s also the greatest gift you’ll ever give yourself others. Your presence – the way you show up in life – impacts others more than your words ever will. One of my favorite quotes reminds me of this: “I can’t hear what you’re saying because your actions are screaming so loudly.”

In recovery, it’s attraction, not promotion. Simply by removing alcohol and drugs from your life, you will have an impact on those around you that you may never fully comprehend. And when you dive into the work of emotional sobriety, that impact magnifies. Your sobriety will inspire. It will allow your relationship to deepen in ways you never thought possible. But it can also be intimidating to others, and some relationships may change or fall away. While difficult, this is often a blessing in disguise.

The most beautiful realization in this journey is that your sobriety isn’t just about you – it’s about the whole. Your commitment to staying sober benefits everyone you encounter, whether it’s your family, your friends, your colleagues, or even strangers.

This past weekend, I had the privilege of being fully present for my son Raymond‘s hockey tournament. The ups and downs of the games were intense, and as a goalie mom, I know how important it is to be spiritually grounded. I don’t always get it right But I’m constantly learning and growing. Early in my recovery, I just wanted to get through the day without blacking out or waking up and a massive drama. But today, my sobriety has given me so much more than I ever imagined.

I was there for Raymond, cheering him on, laughing with friends, and truly soaking in the joy of being with my family. I even put my phone away, responding to most of my texts on Monday . And in his final game, Raymond got us shutout – a memory I’ll cherish because I was fully present. 

Recovery allows you to be present for these moments. It stretches you, yes – sometimes you’ll feel pulled in a million directions. But that’s when you lean into your recovery. Grab your tools, and put them into action, even imperfectly. Because staying sober is just the foundation. The work never ends, but the rewards only grow.

Switch up your inner dialogue about sobriety…

❌Stop saying: Tonight I’m not going to drink. Don’t drink.

✅Instead say: I love how healthy I’m feeling when I’m sober. I love how energized I am when I’m sober. Sobriety feels so good!

When your inner dialogue brings attention to what not to do, it wants it even more.

Think about….Don’t think of the Pink Elephant.

What happens? You immediately think of a pink elephant.

So, instead of using words like “Don’t drink”…flip it and instead associate positive outcomes to sobriety.

This is one part to a large patchwork that allows myself and many of my clients to get and stay sober. ďżź
