The Municipal Chief Executive for Weija Gbawe, Hon. Felix Odartey Lamptey, together with the Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department, has paid a working visit to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital to check on a mother and her two sons following the disturbing incident reported at Gbawe on Friday, 20th March 2026, where the family was discovered to have been preparing and consuming food mixed with human excrement, a development that generated widespread public concern and prompted urgent intervention.
The visit formed part of coordinated efforts by the Municipal Assembly and relevant social protection agencies to ensure that the affected family receives the needed medical attention, psychosocial support and rehabilitation towards full recovery and reintegration.
During the visit, hospital management briefed the delegation on the progress made, indicating that the children have shown significant recovery, while their mother, Leticia Okine, is also responding positively to treatment.
Hon. Felix Odartey Lamptey expressed satisfaction at the remarkable improvement in their condition, noting that their current state was a major departure from the disturbing circumstances under which the case was first reported. He commended the medical team for their professionalism and dedication and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment, in collaboration with the Social Welfare Directorate, to continue supporting the family until full psychological and social rehabilitation is achieved.
As part of the visit, the MCE presented a Bible, a dictionary, toiletries and other personal effects requested by the children. In a brief interaction, the children read a Bible verse to the MCE, demonstrating encouraging signs of emotional and cognitive recovery.
The father of the children expressed gratitude to the MCE, the Social Welfare Directorate and the Minister for Gender for their swift intervention and continued support.
