Dr. Jonathan McKenzie turned his own experience as a first-generation, low-income college graduate into a mission to help the next generation succeed.

The process: Federally funded TRIO programs allow us to provide FAFSA assistance, scholarship support, college tours, academic guidance, mentorship, and resources designed to help our students succeed.

The result: Our students cross the graduation stage ready to tackle college head-on. 🎓

A strong school year starts with knowing what resources are available to you. 📚

FCEA was proud to join the Englewood Back to School Bash, hosted by the Englewood Community Action Council, alongside community partners connecting students and families with support for the year ahead.

We had the opportunity to speak with students and parents about our Awesome Upward Bound and Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) programs, and talk about how TRIO programs can support students on their path to college.

A special thank you to the Englewood Community Action Council for continuing to support FCEA and the work we do in the Englewood community.

At FCEA’s Annual Awards Banquet, we celebrated our High School and GED graduates, our alumni who have earned their college degrees, and the families, mentors, educators, and supporters who have walked alongside them.

Together, our 2026 graduates secured an extraordinary $27,125,000 in federal aid for the 2026–2027 school year. Every dollar represents a student who filled out the applications, pushed through the uncertainty, and kept going until college became more than a goal—it became their next step.
We were honored to share the evening with leaders who have made supporting young people part of their life’s work, including 16th Ward Alderman Stephanie D. Coleman; Dr. Jerry Doss and Mr. Nathaniel Bowman of Thornton Township High School District 205; Edward and Shirley Calahan of the Calahan Foundation; Bernard Clay of Introspect Youth Services; Dr. Diwante Shuford; Courtney Avery Davis; Illinois State Representative Will Davis; Melinda Kelly of the Chatham Business Association; Dr. Arnold Mitchem, President Emeritus of the Council for Opportunity in Education; and Congressman Danny Davis.

To every student, graduate, family member, partner, mentor, and supporter who filled the room—thank you. Nights like this remind us just how much is possible when a community comes together to invest in its young people.
