🧠 BEHAVIOR IS DATA.

When a student is struggling with behavior, our first question shouldn’t always be:

❌ “How do we make this behavior stop?”

Sometimes we need to ask:

👉 What happened right before it?
👉 What happened immediately after?
👉 What might the student be trying to access or avoid?
👉 Is there a skill the student hasn’t learned yet?
👉 What can we teach instead?

Behavior can give us important information about what a student needs.

Instead of only reacting to the behavior, get curious about the WHY behind it. ❤️

Circle time should build community, not test children’s ability to comply.

It can be a beautiful opportunity to sing, tell stories, move, laugh, and connect, but only when it respects how young children actually develop.

Keep it short. Keep it flexible. Let children move. Make participation an invitation, not a demand. And if the children are no longer engaged, let that be useful information, not a behavior problem.

The goal isn’t to make every child sit still, stay quiet, and perform on cue. The goal is to create a shared experience that feels meaningful enough for them to want to join.

🌟 Pyramid Model Practice Spotlight: Visual Schedules 🌟

A classroom schedule is more than a way for adults to keep track of the day—it’s a powerful support for young children!

One Pyramid Model practice is to provide a daily schedule that is accessible at children’s level, is reviewed throughout the day, and includes visuals such as photographs, drawings, or picture symbols to represent each activity.

A helpful visual schedule can:

📸 Show children what is happening now and what comes next
👀 Make the routines and expectations of the day easier to understand
🧠 Help children prepare for transitions and changes
💬 Give children a way to talk about their day and what they can expect
✅ Provide a concrete way to see that an activity is finished

There are lots of creative ways to show that an activity is complete! Children might turn a picture over, remove it, move it to a “finished” spot, or move an arrow to the next activity.

The possibilities are endless—and the schedule doesn't have to be fancy! The key is to make something you can use frequently throughout your day!

Her explanation has great examples of explicitly teaching for desired behaviors/skills. She includes demonstration, practice, and encouragement. Her lesson and visual supports children’s success. She noticed what needed to be TAUGHT, emphasized what TO DO and provides intermittent encouragement.
