There are some fun and new classes coming up at the South Haven Center for the Arts! Upcoming adult offering classes can be found on our website, southhavenarts.org to register and learn more! The September Pocket Gallery is featuring artist Ben Lawson and his beautiful landscape oil paintings! Celebrate Ben Lawson's pocket gallery with an opening reception happening tomorrow, Thursday, September 3rd from 4-6pm.

Ben Lawson's Pocket Gallery will be exhibited at the South Haven Center for the Arts September 4th through September 26th.

Tuesday's at the Center with Aubrey Jewel Rodgers is starting back up for Middle and High School students! September and October will be focusing on Digital Drawing, exploring Character Design and Environment/Setting Design.

Beginning Tuesday, September 8th from 4:00 - 5:30pm and throughout the next three weeks, students will learn how professional artists create memorable characters for animation, comics, games, and illustrated stories. Each week introduces a new aspect of character design while encouraging imagination, observation, and storytelling.

Students are welcome to arrive between 3:30 and 4:00pm. This class is made free thanks to the Van Buren Youth Initiative. To pre-register for Digital Drawing: Character Design - Middle and High School go to southhavenarts.org

Encaustic artist, Carol L. Myers, has several beautiful mixed media encaustic pieces in the exhibition, Held Together. "Standing Connected in the Storm" by Carol L. Myers is one of the pieces featured in the exhibition. She expresses in her artist "every mark I make carries intention and energy, inviting viewers to slow down, breathe, and feel the quiet pulse of healing that runs through all living things."

Helen Geglio's beautiful textiles are all exhibiting in Held Together, as seen at the South Haven Center for the Arts. She writes in her artist bio, "these artworks represent a body of work that spans a period of time during which the world has seemed turned on end. I have found that the very process of slowly stitching together pieces of cloth builds resilience in the face of challenges. Threaded through this work are protective images of cloaks and shields, talismans of the ordinary oracles dwelling among us, mind maps of thinking made visible and wayfinding portals to navigate a path forward."

Featured here in one of Helen's Way Finder pieces, "Way Finder: Along a Twisted Path". Made of wool, she's slow stitched her design with scraps of fabric to create this piece.

Pat DaRif is one of the exhibiting artists in the main exhibition, Held Together. As stated in her artist bio, her current work can best be described as mixed media, made of cloth, paper, and often photographs, and involving the application of various surface design techniques and stitch. Pat's piece "Held Together" is a wonderful mixed media piece with a photograph element, stitched, dyed and painted and many other artist processes to create the piece.

The monthly Community Still Life Drawing is coming up this week on Friday, August 28th from 11:30am - 1:00pm. Join teaching artist Vanessa Rae Brocato she will create the start of a strange and inspiring arrangement of objects to draw. You can bring your own object that you love to draw or that is otherwise special to you to contribute to the display.

Take time to relax, talk with artists and enjoy still life drawing at the South Haven Center for the Arts!

As summer starts to wind down and school starts for surrounding areas, we had a great summer for our youth and adult programs throughout the summertime!☀ Thank you to everyone who joined us this summer, we loved creating, learning, and making art with our community!

Our August Pocket Gallery is featuring Susan Plee's beautiful cyanotypes! Come view her lovely artwork from now until August 29th.

Explore the cyanotype process at Susan Plee's Cyanotype Workshop happening tomorrow! There will be two sessions on Saturday, August 22nd: Elementary Aged Student from 11am - 12:30pm and Adult from 1pm - 2:30pm. Learn a new art form and create your own cyanotype at the South Haven Center for the Arts!

Artist Bio:
Susan is a member of the South Haven Center for the Arts, Berrien Art Guild and a Krasl docent. She currently has a studio at the Box Factory in St. Joseph. Susan also performs and directs the South Haven Senior Services readers theatre group.

Susan discovered the cyanotype art process from a Krasl workshop by artist Casey Roberts and began experimenting with different objects on treated watercolor paper. It’s a reminder of how we all leave a print of our lives, personalized and one of a kind.

The cyanotype process was developed in 1842 by Sir John Herchel. The cyano reaction produces the cyan-blue pigment ferric ferricyanide (also known as Prussian blue), a pigment found in many high-end watercolors, oil and acrylic paints.

After viewing the exhibition downstairs, head upstairs to our education space! For each exhibition there is a free art interactive that correlates with the newest exhibition. As seen downstairs in the gallery, fiber artist Helen Geglio's work showcases a beautiful slow stitching process. Be inspired by her and create your own slow stitched patch using the yarn and burlap available to you at the table!
