A Message from PTS:
We hope you are all staying safe as everyone continues with the storm recovery efforts. We want to provide you with an update on our schools and our new goals for hosting the first day of school.

As of today, 3 of our schools have power, and we are unsure of a restoration date for the remaining 7 campuses. Our teams have been working hard to remove trees and clean up the grounds at each school. There are some existing safety concerns regarding trees down across several properties and damage that needs to be repaired. The city and township have reported ongoing concerns regarding accessibility and safety of sidewalks throughout our area. We are anticipating receiving a shipment of meals for our return to school; those meals will be safely stored in our food service building, which has power.

Due to the uncertainty of power restoration and ongoing cleanup efforts across the city and township, and to allow our staff and families adequate time to prepare for the upcoming school year, our new goal for the first day of school is Tuesday, August 25. Until then, we will be working on and monitoring the following situations:
- Power restoration to our schools and residents' homes
- Safety of roadways and sidewalks
- Cleanup of our school grounds
- Repair of damage
- Conducting systems checks to include HVAC, fire alarms, intercoms, internet connectivity, phones, and other safety aspects of our buildings
- Ensuring food is delivered and ready to be served at each school as power is restored

We have had several groups across the community come out to help clean up the grounds at several of our schools. We also want to thank our staff and community members who came out to help with our food distributions last week. We are so thankful to be in such a supportive community with people who are willing to help us. The storm recovery effort continues to be a very uncertain situation, with many questions still understandably unanswered. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we continue to make decisions in the best interest of our students, staff, and families.

Please continue to support each other and show kindness wherever possible as everyone continues to recover from this unimaginable situation. You can expect ongoing communication from us as we keep you updated on our recovery efforts and ways to prepare for the new first day of school.

A message from PTS:
We want to provide you with an update on the status of our buildings and operations as we continue to work toward the start of the school year.

Power is still out at all of our schools except Portage High School. At this time, power is still out across much of the city, and crews are still addressing downed trees and wires. This is leading to ongoing road and sidewalk closures. We are continuing to assess and address the damage to our schools. Without power, ensuring that all issues have been addressed has been very difficult, but our crews are doing a great job of cleaning up and addressing what they can. We have served all of our current servable food product to the community. Unfortunately, the soonest we can receive a shipment of food for our students is Tuesday.

Based on this information, Portage Township Schools will remain closed on Friday, August 14, Monday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 18. Our goal is to open school on Wednesday, August 19; however, for this to happen, we need to ensure road and sidewalk conditions are safe, ensure that our buildings are safe, have power restored at our buildings, and have food ready to serve our students.

We will continue to provide you with timely updates as more information is available. In the meantime, you are welcome to use our sidewalk-to-sidewalk wifi in our high school parking lot by connecting to the guest network.

In the midst of the devastation we are experiencing, we continue to see our community come together in amazing ways. We want to thank all of the staff, families, and students who have come to help us with recovery efforts. Whether you have assisted crews with cleaning up our grounds or handed out food to the community, we truly appreciate you. Keep supporting each other, stay safe, and we hope to see everyone on Wednesday.

Message from PTS:
We want to provide you with an update on the first day of school and our plans to open our schools. Our custodial, maintenance, mechanic, and administrative teams met this morning to assess the safety of our buildings and access to resources. This is what we have found:

- All schools are currently without power except Portage High School.
- Several of our buildings have sustained damage. There are uprooted trees and roof damage across the district, which has created unsafe conditions.
- Due to the power outages, we are experiencing a loss of food at our schools. We will replace it and are working with our suppliers to schedule replacement deliveries as soon as possible.
- We are communicating with city and township officials. At this time, they are advising that recovery from the storm damage is ongoing. Many roads are unsafe, and sidewalks are littered with debris and wires.

Due to these factors, all of Portage Township Schools will remain closed for the remainder of this week, Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. We will continue communicating with the city and township as we all move forward with cleanup efforts. We intend to provide you with an update at the end of the week regarding the status of school for next week. In order to host school next week, we will need power restored to our buildings, safe conditions in and around our buildings, food replaced to be able to provide breakfast and lunch, and safe driving and walking conditions across the city and township.

We would like to thank our crews who are working on building assessments, cleanup efforts, and planning for our new first day of school. This is an unprecedented event for Portage, and it is certainly not how we anticipated beginning this school year. However, we know the resiliency of our community will shine through. Now is the time to show our strength and come together as one Portage.

"Good afternoon, Portage Township Schools families and staff.

Due to the effects of today’s storm, the first day of school tomorrow, August 12, is canceled for all PTS schools. All scheduled extracurricular activities are canceled today and tomorrow as well.

We are currently assessing the safety of our campuses and are remaining in contact with city and township officials to monitor the progress of recovery. We will keep everyone updated on the status of school for the remainder of the week once we better understand the extent of the damages across the city and township and have a timeline for recovery efforts.

We appreciate your understanding, as the first day of school brings a great deal of anticipation and excitement. However, we must prioritize the safety of our students, staff, and families.
