As we prepare to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, we gathered on Friday to celebrate a meaningful milestone: 20 years of partnership between the Pingree community and the people of the Rosebud Indian Reservation, home to the Sicangu Oyate.
What began with a trip has grown into lasting relationships spanning generations of students, alumni, educators, and Rosebud community members. The generosity and wisdom of our Rosebud friends continue to shape how we understand and engage with others, and this relationship's impact extends far beyond the trips, helping shape curriculum, learning, and what civic engagement means at Pingree.
At the heart of our celebration was a star quilt, gifted to Pingree this summer as a symbol of friendship and gratitude. It will hang on campus as an acknowledgment of our connection and Pingree’s continued commitment to fighting against the erasure of indigenous peoples.
With heartfelt thanks to Alan and Anna McCoy, whose dedication has nurtured this connection for two decades, and to our Rosebud friends for all they have shared with us. Thanks also to Allison Falvey ’18, Emma Phippen ’11, and Adam Logan ’08 for joining us on campus for the occasion. Here’s to the next chapter of this extraordinary partnership.
