This month, we recognize the many Indigenous nations whose cultural traditions have long acknowledged and respected diverse expressions of identity and community belonging. Across Native cultures, understandings of gender, relationships, and social roles have varied widely, reflecting the unique histories and values of each Tribal Nation.
The arrival of European colonizers disrupted many Indigenous cultural practices, including traditional perspectives on identity and community. Despite this, we have worked to preserve, revitalize, and reclaim important cultural knowledge that has been passed down through generations.
