My name is Rebecca Bruce, and I have proudly called South Fayette my home for more than 20 years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from IUP, and I have had the honor to work for the South Fayette School District for many years. As a teacher, para-educator, and most recently an Administrative Assistant at the SF Middle School, I have had the unique opportunity to work in all four schools of our district, and with that, the privilege of interacting with countless students, faculty, and families over the years. I currently work for an accounting firm, but my passion and life mission is centered on helping kids, and it is the inspiration behind why I am running for a seat on our district's school board.
As a mom to two teenage boys who are involved in clubs, sports, and the arts, I am an active and concerned parent in the district and community. Volunteering as an officer of the PTA when my boys were younger allowed me to build relationships with our district leaders and truly appreciate all of the opportunities that our district provides for children.
I appreciate that we value academic excellence and focus on creating opportunities for our students to become well-rounded leaders, but I also know that our community is ready for new ways of looking at the issues that face our district. Being open to changes and new approaches is imperative if we want to remain a school district that is a front-runner in education. It is also essential to me that we provide equal opportunities for all students and learners.
I think that the education system is in a critical state right now. I am inspired to run for school board to help create the change that I think needs to happen. There are a lot of issues facing schools, and I think my experience working for the district, combined with my passion, will give me a great handle on making informed decisions. I do, however, believe that the most important part of the process is sometimes left out. Parents' voices are often not heard when it comes to the major issues that shape the future of the school district.
In the coming weeks, I plan to gather some critical feedback from parents, residents, staff, and students about major issues facing the district. I then plan to formulate plans on how to address those issues. My main platforms are mental health, safety, and fiscal responsibility. Below I have provided a snapshot of my personal views, however, I welcome any opportunity to touch base with residents to hear their questions and concerns as we head into the election. Mental Health
My experience working in schools has given me a perspective around the need to focus on the mental health needs of our students and staff as a priority! After the pandemic, it was even more evident that the mental health crisis was brought to a forefront. We need to provide resources for students, but also it is imperative to have staff resources as well. Covid put a lot of stress on the education system, and I know firsthand that we need to make sure to make mental health a priority.
Safety
No one would argue school safety is a major concern. Schools should be a safe place for students and faculty. We always need to be fully prepared for any scenario. I am fully committed to all measures that provide extra layers of safety.
Fiscal Responsibility
Fiscal responsibility of the district is another area that I am highly passionate about. It is important that we offer every opportunity and stay ahead of the game. With that being said, I think we already have high school taxes. It is not on my agenda to raise school taxes. It is of utmost importance to me that money is spent wisely so that we can remain number one without impacting taxes during this already tough time.
Curriculum
One of the reasons that so many our drawn to our district is the amazing education that is offered. I am constantly amazed by the teachers and curriculum including the many extra opportunities that are available for all types of learners. I want us to continue to provide these opportunities, and continue to challenge students by offering classes that and clubs that allow our students to shine!
Leadership
Success of any school district is reliant on excellent leadership. The values and mission at the top are what sets the tone to trickle down. It is important to me that we have the very best leaders as they are the decision makers and the face of our district. It is important that we keep up with the times to make South Fayette School District the best that it can be. Change is progress and we don't always need to do things the same way just because that is the way it has always been done!
