Today, our students had the privilege of welcoming Soaring Eagle, a Mashpee Wampanoag medicine man, to our school in Sandwich. Through storytelling and discussion, he shared teachings about honoring Mother Earth, respecting nature, and recognizing the deep connection between all living things. The children learned that everything in nature has a purpose and plays an important role in the world around us.

Soaring Eagle also spoke about the herring and their importance to the Wampanoag tribe. He shared how herring return each spring, signifying the New Year. He taught how herring persevere through many challenges on their journey from the ocean back to the ponds where they were born. As a representation of the circle of life, the herring symbolize an unbreakable bond to one’s lineage, homeland, and ancestors.

We are thankful for the visit and the opportunity to learn from Soaring Eagle.

It was so special to spend the afternoon celebrating all of the amazing dads, grandpas, and father figures who make such a difference in the lives of our students.
