Adventure of homeschooling 美國華裔家庭在家教學探險之旅
We have started to homeschool in the middle of the school year (scream). This is an exciting and scary venture for us.
We'd like to share our journey on this page. Support and encouragements are extremely welcome (and needed) when you visit this page.
I learned today that both boys are placed in the upper level math group in their class. I’m a bit surprised and VERY glad. That means I must have done alright. 😄
And we officially withdrew from Wukong Chinese remote lessons. Now that everything is back in person, remote learning appears even more ineffective in comparison. We are not sure what we will do with their Chinese yet. Yang proposed to take over, military style. We shall see. 💪
The school year 2022-2023 is quickly approaching. The Liu boys will be back to school. We have had a great run of homeschooling. They enjoyed their freedom and self-motivated learning and are now ready for structures and routines. They are excited to meet their school friends, and nervous about the unknown (me too). As for us the parents, our concerts are lining up, and our arts foundation is getting busy.
May God guide our new chapter.

Julian’s movie—Touching Grass
“Touch Grass, or Touch Some Grass, is a popular online insult and alternative way of telling someone to 'go outside,' implying they're spending too much time online and it's affecting their wellbeing.”

We are slowly getting back on track, academically. I mean very slowly. So far we are doing only memory verse, math and language arts on a somewhat regular basis. We will continue throughout the summer.
The conflict in me never diminishes. The conflict between "teach the kids at their own pace", and "teach the kids according to their grade level". This anxiety is especially true when dealing with Math. Ultimately, the conflicts result from my struggle between "giving them a stellar college preparation" and "finding their true self through self-motivated and self-guided learning".
Anyway, summer is finally here in the windy city Chicago. We'll spend our time playing outside first.
Since my last post, I had been to Taiwan and back, and been through the loss of my father. This whole time Yang is the only caretaker of the boys. Thank God homeschool took an unexpected turn for the better and boys had a blast with their father.
Academically almost everything was put on hold. However, math is Yang’s priority and math is all they do all day. They start to love math, and become much more fluent with math. And now, math is off my hand because Yang has voluntarily taken over this subject. He teaches so well. I cannot be more glad.
Not only that, Yang has led the boys to be the master of housekeeping. They did major re-organizing and cleaning while I was away. Boys picked up duties of laundry, dishes, reset at bedtime, trash etc. And Yang demands that they continue with the chores so I can “focus on more important stuff”.
Been back for more than a week now, and all I say is, Hallelujah!
