During the fall, Vermont’s amphibians and reptiles find spots to wait out the impending cold until spring arrives again. Most of these species survive freezing temperatures by moving or burrowing below the frost line or overwintering in ponds, lakes, and rivers where temperatures are buffered. Reptiles and amphibians enter a state of dormancy called brumation in the winter, and they typically remain dormant until spring. But what happens when winters are abnormally warm? Many areas of Vermont have experienced higher temperatures than normal this winter and it’s affecting our amphibians and reptiles.

This past December, the Vermont Reptile & Amphibian Atlas received reports of wood frog, American bullfrog, and painted turtle sightings. These species are typically dormant in December, so these sightings were unusual. Irregular patterns of freeze-thaw-freeze are bad news for herps as they rely on ice and snow cover for insulation while brumating. Warmer winter weather may cause herps to draw on their energy resources faster than they normally would, meaning they might not have enough to get through the winter. Warmer winters could also create problems for snakes if they leave their dens while it’s warm and get caught outside when temperatures drop.

You can help Vermont’s amphibians and reptiles during wacky winter warmups by leaving them alone. If you see a snake or turtle basking on a log in the winter, it’s definitely odd, but the animal knows what it’s doing. As the growing season comes to an end make sure to grab some Burlap. Burlap is great to cover your raised beds or gardens after harvest to winterize your soils. Next growing season till in some raised bed recharge and lay the burlap back down. Cut holes in the burlap and plant. Burlap is a great w**d deterrent that is renewable.
