Trinity School Students and faculty celebrated a full and festive last week of classes before Christmas break.

They kicked off with Fine Arts Night, featuring poetry recitations, choral music, recorder performance, and visual art displays. The week that followed included a lively chess tournament, a chemistry demonstration of emissions spectra, recorder caroling around the school, and fun and games on indoor field day.

We are grateful in this season for all of our families and friends and most of all for the gift of our Lord Jesus who became man for us. A very Merry Christmas to you all!

🧪 Chem lab! For their lab on Friday, our chemistry students performed 42 different chemical reactions. The goal was to discover some of the rules of solubility for ionic compounds (salts). They had to see which reactions led to the creation of a precipitate (or solid substance), and which did not. From their observations, they then developed some general rules for solubility of different elements and compounds. Along the way, lots of cool colors!

We were truly blessed to be part of an intimate piano concert by world class pianist Ketevan Kartvelishvili on Friday. It’s hard to put into words the level of dedication and love of music that came through in Ms. Kartvelishvili’s playing. It was both profound and deeply moving. Days later, we are still marveling at the beauty of this experience!

Ms. Kartvelishvili performed Chopin’s Scherzo No. 1 in B minor, followed by three preludes by Rachmaninoff, her favorite composer. She closed out the concert with a brilliant performance of Rondo Toccata, a piece by Revaz Lagidze, a composer from her native country of Georgia,

Ms. Kartvelishvili graciously took questions from the audience, sharing that she first started playing at age 5, performing for the first time in public at age 12 with the Tbilisi Symphony. After attending a music school in Georgia, she came to the United States in 2009 and studied piano under Alexander Toradze at IUSB. Despite her numerous accomplishments and accolades, she shared that she still gets nervous before performances.

We are very grateful to St. Joseph Parish and St. Joseph Grade School, and to their music director Theresa Slott, for hosting the concert, as well as to our own music teacher Elizabeth Grams who helped arrange the performance. Ms. Kartvelishvili also serves as the accompanist at St. Joseph.

A big thank you to Dr. Tim Connolly and to everyone who joined us last night for his lively lecture on transformative experiences.

Dr. Connolly defined transformative experiences as major life events that shake us to the core, bringing about fundamental shifts in our values, preferences, and beliefs, and making us, in a sense, different people. Examples include becoming a parent, experiencing a religious conversion, or surviving a catastrophic accident.

These experiences can give us knowledge that can’t be gained in any other way—think of your parents saying, “You’ll understand someday when you become a parent.” Great art and literature, however, can offer a kind of vicarious access to transformative experiences. Dr. Connolly pointed to two of his favorite literary figures from the Trinity curriculum as examples: Raskolnikov in Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment and Sydney Carton in Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities.

He also explored how contemporary philosophers understand the role of human agency in these experiences. Can we really make rational choices about life events whose outcomes are unpredictable? Or are the most transformative moments the ones that happen to us, beyond our control, such as experiences of suffering?

Dr. Connolly also drew on his expertise in comparative philosophy to discuss how Chinese approaches to transformative experience differ from the individualistic approaches in the modern West.

After his talk, he took questions from the audience of faculty, students and friends, leading to a lively and engaging conversation.

This event marked the launch of our lecture and performance series in our new location, and we were honored to welcome a Trinity alumnus (Class of 1998) as our first speaker. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future!

We really enjoyed our recent trip to Bonneyville Mill, the oldest continuously operated grist mill in Indiana and a great historic site. Thanks to the Elkhart County Parks and Brandon Blackmer for the excellent tour!
