To launch the school year, students at The Portage School of Leaders took on the Portage Portage — a five-day project-based learning experience where every student worked in Wayfinding groups to design and build a boat capable of supporting a passenger.

Students explored engineering, buoyancy, art, boat history, and South Bend’s local portage history while working together across grade levels.

Four boats completed the course at Pinhook Lake, but every team gained something valuable: collaboration, problem-solving, real-world learning, and a deeper connection to our community.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of another school year, and we can't wait to welcome our students back!

Our teachers and staff have been hard at work preparing classrooms, planning engaging lessons, and getting everything ready for a successful year. We look forward to seeing our students tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5, as we begin another year of learning, growth, and opportunity.

Back to School Night is next Wednesday, July 29th, from 4-7 p.m. You and your student will be able to receive schedules, meet with faculty and staff, opt in to a locker, learn more about new policies, attend our Title I Parent Information Meetings at 4:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., and receive other important information about the year ahead.
