47 students of Saint Thomas More Academy (STMA) received national recognition in two Latin exams, marking close to 50% of the school’s Upper School (grades 6-12) being awarded for their academic achievement.
The National Latin Exam (NLE) was established in 1978 to promote, support, and celebrate the teaching and learning of the Latin language and its literature and culture. More than 100,000 students in public, private, charter, and homeschool take the NLE annually in all 50 states and many countries around the world. The NLE recognizes students who score above the national average on each level with certificates and medals. Students at STMA received recognition for scoring above the national average with certificates ranging from Cum Laude to Summa Cum Laude for their work in exams such as “Introduction to Latin”, “Beginning Latin”, “Intermediate Latin”, and “Advanced Latin Prose”.
Students also took part in the annual Universal Latin Exam (ULE), which was created by the Institute for Classical Languages of the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS) and designed specifically for classical schools like STMA. Like the NLE, the ULE measures mastery of Latin grammar and compares students with all national test-takers in the same grade. The ULE gives out two certificates annually for Latin mastery: (1) the “Caesar” award for students who place above the sixtieth percentile among their grade level; (2) the “Augustus” award for students who rank above the 85th percentile nationally.
Way to go Griffins!
