Why judo translates to self-defense
• Throws end fights fast: Most untrained people can’t fall safely. A solid osoto gari or seoi nage on concrete often ends the confrontation.
• Grip fighting = control: Kumi kata teaches you to dominate grips, control distance, and stop someone from grabbing or hitting you.
• Balance breaking: Kuzushi is the core of judo. If you break their balance first, they can’t generate power to hurt you.
• Close-range specialty: Real altercations start close. Judo thrives in the clinch where punches get smothered.
• Newaza for the ground: You learn pins, escapes, and chokes. You can hold someone until help arrives without striking.
• Situational awareness: Randori trains you to stay calm under pressure and react to chaos.
