We mourn the loss of visionary artist and dear friend of The Huntington, Betye Saar, whose remarkable life and work continue to shape the cultural landscape of Los Angeles and beyond.

Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Saar transformed American art through assemblages that revealed the emotional and historical power of everyday objects. Emerging as an important artistic voice during the feminist and civil rights movements, Saar became a pioneering figure in Black feminist art.

"Drifting Toward Twilight," one of Saar’s major works, is among her enduring contributions to The Huntington. The site-specific installation was inspired by her childhood memories of visiting our gardens and her lifelong connection to nature.
