Somerville ISD briefly delayed student dismissal this afternoon due to a gas leak. At 3:11 p.m., SISD was informed that a contractor accidentally struck a two-inch gas line while working on construction behind Somerville High School.
Because the exact location of the leak was initially unknown, a "hold" alert was issued on both campuses. This was done out of an abundance of caution to ensure students were not put at risk by evacuating to an unsafe area.
Working in coordination with the Burleson County Sheriff's Office, the Somerville Volunteer Fire Department, and Atmos Energy, the hold remained in place while the source of the leak was identified. Once the source was discovered, high school students were evacuated into the Yegua Center to move them safely away from the leak.
During this time, air monitor testing was conducted to ensure students would be safe to exit from both campuses. After receiving that clearance around 4:10 p.m., we began a process to safely dismiss students beginning with our school buses. Both campuses were clear at 4:32 p.m.
No injuries were reported throughout this process. Crews are continuing work to close up the gas leak on 9th Street, in between Avenue H and Avenue L. SISD will release guidance once an all-clear notice has been issued.
