Students in grade 6 made papier mache masks designing them to represent social masks they wear. They identified areas of their life where they need to act a certain way, and designed a part of their mask to represent that aspect of their life. These masks are more that just cool sculptures! Ask you 6th grader about their design!

Students had their portraits taken (shown here only backs of heads... many are faces) and let us know, in writing, that they are more than a stereotype. It was a good learning opportunity for all of us. Watch for a post announcing the display of these in the hallways of Chenery this year!

Grade 6:
We learned about contemporary artist, Wendy Ewald, making statements about stereotyping on photos of ourselves. It was powerful work. Look for a post letting you know about the display of these photos before the end of the school year.

This week is Ms. Fairley's last week :(
She has been a PHENOMENAL student teacher. Your kids have had the greatest experiences with her. We wish her the best as she goes off to begin an, inevitably, successful career as and outstanding art teacher.

Grade 6:
These are the moon phase weaving looms we made. We are working on weaving on them. We started making earth beads for the center. "Why," you ask? Because the moon revolves around the earth, of course!

Grade 6: We did some work looking at the phases of the moon this year. We used this research to create some pretty cool weaving looms! Watch for photos!

Inspired by contemporary artist/ designer, Yellena James and her imaginary lanscapes. Also inspired by our amazing courtyard at Chenery...
05/02/2016
Grade 6:
We learned about Yellena James, a contemporary design artist. James makes intricate imaginary ecosystems in her two dimensional work. We observed nature in a series of observational drawings in the courtyard, then used these drawings to create imaginary ecosystems in our own work.

Grade 6:
We observed in the Chenery courtyard for two days, collecting a mini sketchbook of drawing from life that we then used as reference images in our Yellena James inspired work.

September 2015: We are all equal in. Ms. Kelley's "Mancala Theory" reminds us of this. Art making is fun for some and stressful for others, but we are all valued equally, and room 313 is a safe place to learn.

Byrnes and Kelley were able to observe The Gardner’s partnership with The Tobin School, a local K-8 public school in Boston. Fifth graders from the Tobin School sat and discussed art in the museum, using phrases like, “I respectfully disagree…” and “I drew the conclusion that… based on my observations of…” Watch for a follow up day of observation at the Tobin School…
