Sunday Fitness Q and A Should every workout include flexibility exercises? Yes to increase the range of motion of the joints and to prevent injury. You should gradually move into every stretching pose without jerking or bouncing. Why is a warmup important? It’s healthier for the heart to have a gradual introduction to exercise. During the warmup period it’s a good idea to have a slow period to raise the temperature by a couple degrees as it will increase better circulation. How do runners prevent shin splints? Athletes should avoid running on hard surfaces for long distances and should frequently purchase new shoes. The pain is caused by an excessive amount of pressure over a long period of time on the shin bone ( tibia) and its connective tissue.
