Ohioans represent at this year's The Association for Gravestone Studies Conference at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Plans are still in progress for next year, but hold June 17-22, 2025 in Pennsylvania!

The Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the fiscal year 2024 Cemetery Grant Program. The grant funding amount available this cycle is $104,000. Grant applications may only be submitted online. The online application can be found at https://cemeterygrants.com.ohio.gov/. The Stockton Student Scholarship Award

Free registration for the AGS Conference!

Eligibility guidelines:
• Awards are open to graduate or undergraduate students at any accredited college or university.
• Students submit an application form (available on the AGS website) with supporting documentation to the AGS Scholarship Committee.
• Research topics may include the study of gravestones (such as marker materials, forms, and motifs, as well as carver studies) and cemeteries (such as surveys, burial practices, and landscape histories).
• Excluded are any research projects already funded by AGS through other awards.

The Stockton Student Scholarship provides the recipient with complimentary conference registration, on-campus lodging, and on-campus meals during the AGS annual conference. The recipient receives a complimentary student membership in AGS for one year beginning June of the year of the award. Additionally, up to $1,000 in reimbursement for allowable out-of-pocket travel expenses is provided. The total value of a Stockton award is about $1,750. Scholarship recipients agree to present their research at the annual conference if asked to do so; their work may also be published in Markers, the AGS Quarterly, or in other ways approved by AGS.

The Slater Student Scholarship Award

The total value of a Slater award is about $1,000. Scholarship recipients agree to present their research at the annual conference if asked to do so; their work may also be published in Markers, the AGS Quarterly, or in other ways approved by AGS.

Founding chapter member, Krista Horrocks wrote an excellent article titles "Cemeteries Are in Grave Danger: A Call to Action" in the September/October 2021 issue of Echoes Magazine (pages 42-45).

Despite the pun, Ohio cemeteries really are in grave danger, and we need to do more to put legislation in place to help preserve all our burial grounds in Ohio.
