Southern Middle School

The Southern MIddle School Youth Service Center donated reading glasses and hygiene supplies to the Bethany House this week. The glasses were an anonymous donation and the hygiene bags were part of an ongoing initiative to help supply unhoused families with hygiene supplies and other needs.

Warriors Helping Hands is a student-led initiative created by the student members of the YSC advisory council members. If you would like to donate hygiene supplies, please reach out to Rusty Hendricks at [email protected] or call at 606-676-5345.

Afternoon Parent Pick-Up:
Parent pick-up must be accessed through the Patterson Branch entrance. WTLO Road is EXIT ONLY in the afternoon and is the ONLY exit, unless you are also picking up a student at SWHS.

Morning Drop-Off:
For morning drop-off, you may enter through either entrance.

Please allow extra time and be patient with us as we implement this new change.

August 12th , Buses will Begin to Roll for the 2026-2027 School Year Pulaski County Bus Drivers Travel Over 7000 Miles a Day

🍎The Pulaski County School system provides free transportation for all students and with Pulaski County being the third largest county in the state with 677 square miles of area, transportation is an essential part of the total school program. The Pulaski County School System’s fleet of 140 buses travel over 7000 miles per day! They have 111 daily routes, plus shuttles and transport students to an average of 1300 field trips a year.

🎒Safety programs are required in elementary schools that include hands on safety demonstrations and all transported students participate in evacuation drills. “Buster Bus” an interacting robot, is used in preschool and elementary schools to teach the students about Bus Safety. The district recognizes “Bus Safety Week” as an opportunity to further increase safety awareness for students, parents, and staff. Under the leadership of the Director of
Transportation, Tim Woods, Pulaski County’s Transportation Department includes 130 regular and substitute drivers, 4 driver trainers, 14 Special Needs Monitors, and 6 Vehicle
Technicians.

👨🏼‍🏫Pulaski County School System has an ongoing education-training program for all bus drivers. All new drivers must complete hours of training which includes specific driving tests in order to qualify for a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Drivers are required to complete 8 hours of training per year to keep their certification.

🚍All buses are diesel operated and are equipped with two-way
radios for communication and rapid response to emergencies and cameras with audio and video capabilities. Bus safety is also insured by service schedules that include daily pre-trip inspections and a thorough servicing once a month. The district maintains a full service garage with highly trained certified technicians.

🛑School bus safety is a team effort! With as many buses traveling thousands of miles, motorists are asked to be especially cautious during morning and afternoon route times. Running school bus stop signs, passing buses, or failing to yield to buses creates a great danger to children who are loading and unloading. Ignoring a bus stop sign or accidentally running a stop sign due to carelessness could literally mean life and death to a child. Help us keep your child safe by talking to your child about bus safety rules. School buses can not travel every road, but a pick-up location is close. For more information, bus schedules, school boundary zones, or interested in becoming a school bus driver, contact the Pulaski County School System at 606-679-1123 and ask for Transportation.

🎉Pulaski County Schools is pleased to announce Mr. Trevor Smith as the new principal of Northern Elementary School.

While this marks Mr. Smith's first principalship, he brings a wealth of educational leadership experience and a deep commitment to serving students. A proud Pulaski County native, Mr. Smith has dedicated his career to the children and families of our community. Throughout his time in education, he has served in a variety of roles, including leading students in the Rogers Programs, as well as teaching and coaching at Southwestern High School. His passion for education, strong leadership, and commitment to student success make him an excellent choice to lead Northern Elementary into the future.

"I am incredibly honored and excited for the opportunity to join the team and community at Northern Elementary School! Born and raised in Somerset, it has always been a dream of mine to serve and educate the community that helped shape who I am. It is an added bonus that my wife is also an educator within Pulaski County Schools.

Education has been a central part of my life for many years. Before entering the classroom, I had the privilege of working with the Center for Rural Development through programs such as Rogers Explorers and Rogers Scholars, helping to develop and mentor young leaders across Kentucky. I also worked at the University of the Cumberlands before beginning my teaching career five years ago.

During my time with Pulaski County Schools, I have been fortunate to serve in a variety of roles. I taught social studies at Southwestern High School, coached baseball and golf in both head and assistant coaching positions, and served as a club sponsor. Each of these experiences has reinforced my passion for building meaningful relationships and supporting students both inside and outside the classroom.

As an educator and now a school leader, I believe every decision should be guided by one simple question: Is this what's best for students? I have inherited an outstanding school with a strong foundation, and my goal is to build upon the incredible culture that already exists. I am committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, valued, challenged, and inspired to reach their fullest potential while working alongside our dedicated staff, families, and community to make Northern Elementary an exceptional place to learn and grow.
