Congratulations to Solon High School students Lais Moura Salles and Alex Gilkey, who were named national finalists at the SkillsUSA Championships, a national career and technical education competition held June 1-5 in Atlanta.

The students competed as part of the Excel TECC SkillsUSA Chapter against top career and technical education students from across the country.

Lais, a junior in CADD Engineering Technology, placed ninth in the nation with her team in the Career Pathways Showcase: Industrial & Engineering competition, which included 29 teams, the largest field ever for the event.

Alex, also a junior, earned eighth place nationally with his team in the Engineering Technology & Design competition, competing among 37 teams.

The SkillsUSA Championships is one of the largest hands-on workforce development events in the world, featuring nearly 7,000 state champions competing in more than 120 events.

Congratulations to Lais and Alex on this outstanding national recognition!

The last day of kindergarten was full of wonder at Roxbury Elementary as students watched their classroom butterflies spread their wings and take flight.

In the weeks leading up to the release, kindergartners cared for caterpillars in a classroom butterfly habitat and closely observed their life cycle. They watched as the caterpillars grew, formed chrysalides and emerged as butterflies.

Students learned about the characteristics of living things as they observed how butterflies grow and change, need energy, respond to their environment and have traits that make them unique.

The experience helped students practice respect and care for living things. It also built an important foundation for what they will continue exploring in first and second grade, including how living things use their environment to meet their needs.

FINAL REMINDER - DEADLINE IS TODAY, JUNE 9

It’s Time to Opt In for Bus Transportation for Next Year!

The opt-in window for 2026-27 Solon Schools bus transportation is now open. Please use the link below to reserve your child's seat by Tuesday, June 9. Students who are not opted in by that date will not have a seat on the bus next school year.

2026-27 Solon Schools Bus Transportation Opt-In Form: https://trst.in/lXyzt1

We need opt-in information by June 9 to begin our routing process for the fall.

What you should know: Students may have one stop plus their home address in the morning and afternoon (this includes day care locations).

If your child will need transportation to an address other than your home, including day care or a shared parenting arrangement, you must also complete the 2026-27 Day Care/Shared Parenting Transportation Request Form: https://trst.in/jBzxwX. This form must be submitted every year.

As a reminder, parents of kindergarten students must be present at the bus stop to receive their child after school, unless the student is being transported to a day care location.

If you have questions, please email our Transportation Department at [email protected]. Route information will be communicated to families in August just prior to the start of school.

For Bryan Shin, becoming a state champion was the culmination of four years of hard work, growth and commitment to track and field.

The recent Solon High School graduate recently won the OHSAA Division I state championship in shot put with a throw of 60 feet, 3 inches. He also earned bronze in discus, making him a two-time state medalist at the meet.

Check out our feature story to hear Bryan share what was going through his mind during the competition, how he overcame a challenging season and what makes Solon’s track and field program so special.
